As you can see I'm a big fan of 4k UHD. It's what i'm focusing on collecting as it has the best future proofing capability. It looks and sounds incredible.
Once I recieve a disc, the first step is to rip that disk using MakeMKV.
I'm using the LG 6x BP50NB40 Slim Blu-Ray drive with the SDFtool Flasher custom firmware installed.
Once the file is ripped, it goes over to my 4-bay Terramaster DAS that contains four 12TB Seagate Iron Wolf drives. (48tb total). 24tb will be used to store movies while the other 24tb will serve as redundency so if I ever have a drive fail I won't lose an entire hard drive worth of movies.
The brains of the server is a GMKtec Mini PC N95. It has enough horse power to run the Jellyfin server and stream the uncompressed files over the network. I'm rocking a 7'' display made for Raspberry Pi setups but works great for this purpose.
Currently this setup is out in the open but once I'm satisfied with the setup this will all get tucked away.
This is my "mini theater" (and Gizmo). Here I can access my Jellyfin server and enjoy full uncompressed audio and video streamed right over my network or any device with Jellyfin.
Why I personally pursued this setup:
I'm a big fan of options and I'm also a big fan of having backups of my physical media.
Pros:
* With this setup I now have 3 copies of every movie. 2 in digital form and the other is the physical disc itself.
* Reduce chances of scratching discs by leaving them in their original case. Less handling = less potential damage.
* I can access my media when I'm away from home or on the road.
* I get a 1:1 representation of the film over my network at home. No compromised on Audio or Video quality when compared to the disc itself.
Cons:
* This is expensive and I've calculated the cost to be around $1500 Update: $1675 after adding it up. However, the vast majority of that comes from the media server itself. 48tb is a lot of storage and this total number could be drastically reduced with a smaller storage solution. Of course, that means you will have to start compressing your movies to a lower quality to keep the file sizes down.
* Setup is a bit tricky to get everything working but honestly Jellyfin is pretty simple once you get the hang of how it works both host and client side.
