What Set JumpStarts Could've Been

Set JumpStarts are like mini time capsules of how overall lower tier themes in Standard looked like and now that they all have long rotated, it's kind of sad to see the wasted potential. They could easily release a beginner box-like product at the end of the year that includes 10 themes of the 6 Standard sets that represent the Standard year in some way but the absolute horror that was the set JS product killed that idea completely.

Mid Standard cards that were just good enough to be played in Standard but are ass in non-rotating formats see no love after rotation. Like the only format where people would actually see a horrible card like Mite Overseer is in JumpStart and that's kind of it. If we had something like a beginner box for Standard every year, older Standard format cards would've seen use in JS cubes/battle boxes to this day.

It'd also be the perfect product for old Standard format glazers that talk about older versions of the format non-stop and with a product like that, they could play it now as well.

Weiß Schwarz with any 52 card Poker deck - Rot Schwarz (Follow Up)

This is a follow-up to a previous post.

I gave every card in a 52 card Poker deck simple effects and easy to remember stats. This way, anyone with two Poker decks (literal cents) can play this game without the need of sleeves. You only have to remember 13 effects to play and teach Weiß Schwarz.

My design philosophies:

  1. Simple effects. Level 0s, 1s and 2s all have 2 effects and Lever 3s (your wincons) have 3 effects. Climaxes (called A/X for Ace/Ten) have the 2 most common triggers/effects.
  2. Card number must equal to card power/level (3 has 3 Power, ez to remember). Power increments not in halfs (easy to keep track of with dice).
  3. The deck is designed to only be played against itself and effects are balanced around that.
  4. Some cards are supposed to be better than other cards. Good draws must still feel exciting.
  5. Choices must matter. The better player has to win slightly more often but not too much or else the game will feel unfun for worse players.
  6. Effects with costs are optional, effects without are mandatory.
  7. Effects must be keywordable and short enough to fit the card as if you were to write the effects on the card, so people can bring little printouts of the effects to remember.

A few Rule 0s:

  1. Before the game starts, you get to remove any two characters from your deck to get to 50 cards. I wanted to use this to make decks a bit adjustable to one's playstyle.

  2. No colour requirements.

  3. ON PLAY and ON DEATH happen at the same time.

  4. Looking from Surveil, Observe and Direct put cards in a private zone that is still part of your Deck (during the effect, the Deck size is still the same until it fully resolves).

  5. You may fail Searches.

That said, I am not good at the game. I don't know how to balance cards. I don't know what makes a good game a good game. I don't know the PSCT of this card game. So I'd appreciate any kind of feedback.

I've tested this idea many times with many different people and this is what I ended on:

A True Weiß Schwarz Standard

If Weiß Schwarz had a rotating standard format that rotates a block every year (9-12 sets simultaneously) with 4 main sets a year with ~100 unique cards per set, reprints, own character designs, a generic shared trait (e.g. "Standard") and 1 card name per unique card effect similarly to Pokémon or MtG, which cards/mechanics would you want to see in the first set(s), how would you distribute colours/levels and at which power level would you want to start at? A format like that would greatly help the game itself (not the finances tho) and I've always wondered that.

I'd start with the usual Salvage Brainstorm, Draw Brainstorm, Level 0 Assist, Level 2 Level Assist, a Drop Search, a Level 1 on Reverse CXC and a Level 1 on Attack CXC for most colours, as well as popular Level 3 mechanics from a few years ago from every somewhat simple archetype (combo, control, beatdown/rush) to maybe establish some colour identity maybe.

At one point I'd love the format to have Towards the Future Together, Tokino Sora as well as its supporting cards because it's my favourite "wincon".

I think the closest thing we have to a card pool everyone could use is the massive Bandori card pool.

New Format Idea: True Vanilla Format

There is an incredible amount of "true vanillas" in PTCG history and surprisingly, they're all roughly at a similar power level despite power creep. So much so that some older cards would be optimal in this format.

Ruleset: current standard ruleset with the exception of the card pool

Card Pool Restrictions:
Pokémon: Every card that has any real attack effect text or ability is out of the question. This includes "Discard a [-] Energy from this Pokémon." or "During your next turn, this Pokémon cannot attack." type of text. Rule-clarifying text in parentheses is not real text. Card names and traits (Fusion Strike, Ancient/Future, Ancient Traits, Held Items, Rule Boxes) are not abilities. Besides that, any Pokémon that has ever been legal for play at any official tournament is legal.
Rest of the deck (Trainers, Energies): Everything starting from G Regulation onwards including Basic Fairy Energy is legal for play. Yes, this includes Technical Machines and Ace Specs.

In this format, every legal multi prizer (list below) is a viable strategy due to there being counters to Pokémon-V and Pokémon-ex (Choice Belt, Maximum Belt, Kieran, Black Belt's Training) but not specifically Pokémon-GX and Pokémon-GX having GX attacks. There are single prize decks that can easily perform at the same level as all the relevant decks. Most decks I've built and played with ended up becoming decks with multiple splashable Pokémon to counter almost all meta relevant threats. Everything from big Basic beatdown decks to tanky control decks is a viable strategy. Due to the lack of on board draw, games don't feel like two players playing solitaire and resources in hand and in discard matter way more than you'd expect. The games are also interactive and the decks are great for teaching the Basics of the card game.

Here's the list of all multi prizers in the card pool:
Pinsir GX HIF Basic 180 HP (GGC 110; GGC 160 GX)
Charizard GX HIF Stage 2 250 HP (RRCC 140; RRCC 300 GX)
Gyarados GX HIF Stage 1 230 HP (WWWC 130; WWWC 240 GX)
Raichu GX HIF Stage 1 210 HP (LLC 120; LLC 200 GX)
Pikachu V FST Basic 200 HP (C 20; LCC 100)
Lucario V FST Basic 210 HP (FFC 120)
Tyranitar V FST Basic 230 HP (DCC 80; DDDC 150)
Surfing Pikachu V CEL Basic 200 HP (WWW 150)
Pikachu ex SVP Basic 200 HP (LLC 120) (three variants)
Darkrai ex SVP Basic 210 HP (DC 40; DDC 110)
Lucario ex SCR Stage 1 250 HP (FFC 120)

If you've got any questions, go ahead. I also have a huge list of cards I consider to be playable in this format as well as a list of splashable counters against any type of relevant archetype if you're interested. There are also a ton of combos (guaranteed multi prize knockouts or super fast energy acceleration) to discover.

Multi Prizers after Mega Evolution

With the -ex gimmick staying for a second era (SVI+ and MEG+), do you all think that it will stay for Gen 10 as well? Pokémon seems to be looking to standardise their operations going forward (e.g. the separate video game platform Pokémon Champions) which seems to also be happening in the TCG (as mentioned SVI+, MEG+ and also old mechanics like Ultra Beast being reallocated to -ex in TCG Pocket). It would make even rotated cards truly timeless and instead of raw power creep we could finally see rotation being the primary way of making people get new sets. It would also allow for reprinting Pokémon instead of the 50 homage decks we've gotten since SVI which helps with having to create new cards. And constant HP/damage thresholds also make designing sets much easier.

Let me know what you think

Historical Change in Card Legality for Worlds 2026

With this year's third main set releasing on July 17th, Pitch Black cards will be legal for Worlds 2026 marking the first time since Sun & Moon Unified Minds a third main set is playable for the format. Despite that, the legal card pool won't be bigger as sets of the previous years were bigger and sometimes included the year's mid-year specialty set (SFA in 2024 for example).

This isn't some coincidence of course and a direct cause of the shift in schedule towards the JP one.

This is also the first time 5 main sets (MEG, PFL, POR, CRI, PBL) will have their Worlds debut.

Pokémon TCG Jumpstart Themes (40 card decks)

Jumpstart is a MTG mini format where you get two 20 card half-decks, shuffle them up and start playing. These half-decks come in various themes from a huge pool of MTG's strategies and cards. Non-constructed Pokémon play is a bit challenging to make feel balanced. I made 8 themes under certain restrictions (no more than 2 of the same name, no multi-prizers or ace specs, every deck has to include certain generic cards, cards must all be accessible/cheap etc.) I'm planning to make more and host mini tournaments at my local game store.

Feel free to try them out, post your own themes and give me feedback!

You can also suggest a theme/card for me to build something around.
