The 1948 Tour de France was held between 30 June and 25 July and had 21 stages over almost 5,000 kilometres.Gino Bartali won the Tour for the second time after already winning it in 1938. During the race he almost quit, but after a phone call from the Italian prime minister he found new motivation and still won the race. He also won the mountains classification, while Belgium won the team standings.1948 was also the first year with a prize for the yellow jersey and the first Tour ever shown live on television.

The Tour lasted 23 days and covered an incredible 4,395 kilometres.
French rider Georges Speicher won the race for the French national team.
