Be honest. Should I buy this beetle?

I posted a while back looking for advice on purchasing a VW beetle as a first car and it was surprising positive. I recently visited a dealership and lo and behold, a 2001 Automatic. I have a test drive booked for tomorrow (along with another car) and plan to perform a PPI beforehand, however a trusted family mechanic has continuously stated to avoid ALL beetles and VW as a whole.

My concerns:

  1. 2001 is older then most suggestions I received.
  2. It doesn’t have a service book as far as I’m concerned.

Here’s what the listing says (copy pasted):

Additionally the car comes with a 1 year warranty and 3 month road side assistance. Aesthetically it looks great in person, especially for its age but my concerns are reliability as everyone says it will bleed my dry. It’s $6k aud but hopefully can barter down with ~193,000kms. Is this something I should pass up and just go for a Toyota like everyone says or is it worth considering?

VW Beetle as a first car?

For context I’m a teenage girl with little to no knowledge on cars as a whole (however I am more than willing to learn as I believe it’s important). I am getting my P plates this month and have been looking on FBM for a secondhand car.
For years it has been my dream to get a VW Beetle but everyone I tell says they are unreliable. I have the funds to purchase with a little extra for maintenance and repairs however my parents are very concerned about the reliability.
I’ve found a few reasonably priced ones online which appear to be in good condition but I really want to know if they’re as bad as their reputation.
It will mainly be used to get between my casual work, home and uni.

- Is there anything in particular I should look out for as a dead giveaway that purchasing would be a bad idea?
- What kind of mileage should I look for (in km)?
- What years should I be looking at?

(Sorry if I’ve done something wrong, first ever post)

Edit:
- I live in Australia.
- I’m looking for an automatic.
