Is it safe to set the emergency brake while my car is lightly rolling in neutral?

I’m just curious because every time I do neutral, press down the brake pedal, set the emergency brake, and then put it in park, I still hear a loud thud whenever I shift out of park. but recently, everytime I take it out of the emergency brake, I let it roll for a second into the regular parking pawl brake, however it seems like that’s what’s causing the loud thud, since that means I’m shifting to drive from the regular parking pawl. it only happens on hills, so it probably has to do with resting on the pawl, right?

So I have two questions:

• When I undo the emergency brake while on a hill, is it fine if I just press the brake pedal then shift into drive, without letting it fall onto the regular parking prawl’s weight instead? Is that the safer way for your transmission to do it?

•Is it safe to throw on the emergency brake while I’m slowly rolling down the hill in neutral, without coming to a complete stop first? (I figure it’s fine because neutral barely involves the transmission, right?)

lol it’s kinda hard to explain without showing someone visually what I mean, hopefully you guys know! I have a 2006 New Beetle and it’s my first car. I’m trying to do everything I can to keep it running smoothly.

thank you :)

Couldn’t be happier!

I didn’t want a beetle, or even a volkswagen, but when I saw this 2014 2.5l with a 5 speed manual at 70k miles, I had to buy it.

Anything to worry about?

I just had a set of new tyres and a front wheel alignment on my 2007 beetle luna and they handed this to me as I left (the mechanic wasn’t around so I couldn’t ask what it meant at the time) - should I be worried? From what I understand, the positive caster on the front wheels isn’t a bad thing, but the rear camber doesn’t look promising. It’s a FWD so I could only get the front alignment as opposed to all 4 wheels.

Can I clear this myself?

I recently had an oil change & service so am pretty sure I don't need this reminder. Can I clear the message via my radio, or do I need to return to the shop and have them use their obd device?

License plate screws (serious issue)

So, what screws should I use for my beetle you guys? I only have a Walmart and Lowe’s in my area.

If you’re wondering what happened my license plate has been stolen again….I know what you’re thinking. Again…well again. This is the third time my license plate has gone missing.

The first time, I thought it was my screws because they were a little loose, the second time was kinda similar (I bought bigger screws), butI hadn’t gone anywhere and the next day my license plate was gone. The last (CURRENT TIME) I bought a good size screw I think, but I even put tape all over my license plate and as you can see that’s all gone, but one screw!!!!

I don’t know who’s doing this or why. I’m ordering an outside camera, but in the mean time cause I can’t go anywhere without a license plate. What screws would y’all recommend?

2013 Volkswagen beetle turbo alternator issues

Hello as a title says I have a 2013 turbo Volkswagen beetle and I’ve been on the search for alternators that are not super pricey because I’m a broke college student. If anyone knows about cars, does anyone know if this would be an OK alternator for a 2013 Volkswagen beetle 2.0 L premium gas turbo? Or any suggestions if this does not work

1.8t Question

So about a year and a half ago, I bought a 2001 Beetle GLX from a used car lot where the guy basically resells auction cars, including this one. When I got it, the only noticeable thing wrong was that the hood wouldn’t latch completely. But when I test drove it, I took it for a half hour run on the highway and it went to 80 and held it like it was born to go at least that fast. I have no maintenance records on the car, so I’ve been plugging away at it and at one point I noticed that the radiator wasn’t sitting straight and was kinda wedged into the mount. I had no idea how it was supposed to go together, but I knew that wasn’t it and was planning on addressing it this summer. About a month ago, I hit a parking curb well enough to undo how it was wedged in, limped home, and got to work on it.

The whole radiator/condenser/fan assembly sandwich was completely out of the mount, and between how it had been wedged in and the parking curb, both the radiator and condenser were somewhat warped, so I got new ones. That was complicated and took some time because the first radiator I got had a leak. Once I got a solid radiator though, I couldn’t get the system to burp and coolant was barely moving. I tried pre-filling the radiator from where the upper hose joins tee-1, massaging hoses, nothing.

I had wanted to change the water pump and timing belt anyway, since I didn’t know their age, so I got into the timing belt area and there was a slight coolant leak at the water pump because the o-ring had compressed flat. There’s also a front crankshaft seal leak that I’ll be dealing with. I know there’s a slight leak at the coolant flange coming from the temperature sensor, and I’m replacing both.

Finally, and this is where we get to the picture, I was following the heater core hoses because I want to flush the main return line while the water pump is out and I’m changing the thermostat, and I noticed that the wastegate on the turbo looks really corroded, but it’s just the wastegate itself. Is there a reason it would look like this and does it have to do with the coolant leak?

Back Window coming unglued on convertible top- 2004 Beetle.

I had my back window repaired last August and re-glued by an upholstery company that unfortunately has gone out of business.
The top left area of the canvas has become unglued and I cannot find anyone to fix it for me.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this? Is there a kit for it?

u/Due-Coat-90 — 12 days ago

What is this part?!

My daughter has a 2010 Beetle that I HATE. Well, its been overheating (along with having a parasitic drain but thats a whole other issue) I took it to a shop and had them look at it.

My gathering is we should light it on fire and roll it down a hill but, alas, I don't have money to buy her a new car. I also don't have the money to pay someone to fix it.

ANYWAY.... the paperwork says "an active coolant leak originating from a small plastic coolant junction located within the coolant plumbing near the engine oil cooler assembly.

Now, I went and bought a blacklight flashlight and looked at everything to try and see the part they were talking about and I found this piece lit up like the sun. I also found another little plastic fitting but cant get a good picture of it.

So... what is this mystery piece actually called so I can buy a replacement!

Adding Bluetooth to stock monsoon radio (help wanted)

I want to add Bluetooth to the OEM monsoon radio I have a Bluetooth audio board that I'm planning on hijacking one of the audio inputs to the stock amplifier through the head unit. However, I can't seem to figure out a good place to splice in the digital audio signal. I have two ideas of where it should be possible, however I don't have the knowledge on how either one could be feasibly done.

  1. Splicing in the audio by tricking the car into thinking there is a CD changer and sending audio in through there

This is my first idea. It's simply just tricking the car into thinking there's a CD changer and feeding in the audio from the Bluetooth board through the audio inputs that are already there. However, I do not know how to communicate with the head unit to fake the presence of the CD changer.

  1. Removing the cassette tape drive and splicing in the audio after the low level preamp and digital conversion for the tape head

This one seems like it might work but I have no idea where on the board the conversion from analog to digital signal happens and also if it is just two channels because if it is multiple channels I'd have to condense into two. It might be more than it's worth in effort.

The last picture is the picture of the low-level preamplifier for the cassette tape head

Starter for a 1972 vw beetle

Thought I fixed it just to have the issue come back
I’ve had minimal issues with my bug for the first few months of ownership untill one day it wouldn’t start. (Sad face)
Seemed like a starter issue as I couldn’t get the motor to turn over and when I turned the key, the dash lights kicked and all I heard out the rear was a faint click from the starter.
I was able to push start the bug and decided to replace the starter and battery as they were both installed by the previous owner and I didn’t fully know what condition they were in.
Installing the new starter was troublesome as the previous starter bushing was stuck so I decided to install the starter regardless as I was running out of daylight.
The bug kicked right over after that and I thought I was in the clear but the next day I was back to square one experiencing the exact same issue I had originally.
?? Is my issue purely from that starter bushing or should I be investigating elsewhere??
