Digital Camera for Long Trip

I am a novice photographer, only ever messed with smart phone cameras, but am going on a big bike packing trip and am thinking of getting a nicer digital camera for it. I always think a smart phone is fine, then I see pictures from a real camera and am blown away with how nice they are.

Will be doing the full route of caravans through Morocco, and then going up into Europe. After some research, it seems like the OM-5 Mark II is the best balance of weight, picture quality, and rugged durability (will need to withstand dust and sand, etc.). Thinking it could become a new hobby generally but the bike trip is spurring me to maybe pull the trigger.

Do people think it's worth the weight to get a nicer camera? As a novice, will I actually be able to gain the benefits from it? Any recs for other choices?

Had my bike stolen last night so putting out as many feelers as possible in case anyone sees it. Was stolen in the Charles Village/Old Goucher area of the City. Appreciate folks keeping an eye out for it!

Non-Riders Camping for a Night

Firstly, very excited for my first RAGBRAI! With that, I have a friend who lives in Iowa and we're trying to figure out seeing each other while I'm there. She likes to camp so was saying maybe she would come to one of the towns and hang out for the night and camp with my group.

Is this feasible? Would there be anywhere for her to park nearby/do you need a special permit to park nearby? Appreciate any insights!
