Can anyone confirm the model of this gas tank?
Can anyone positively ID this gas tank? It came with my 1981 CB650 Custom but it doesn't match anything I've seen for this bike. It has different mounting system, different petcock size, different filler cap. I'm struggling finding the correct petcock for it (M20) and also the filler cap. Mine doesn't seem to be venting properly and I can't find any new aftermarket replacement assembly.
I've now purchased two petcocks which should work per part number cross reference, but they're all M18 and my petcock thread is definitely M20. 😡🤦
1981 CB650 before & after
Pics the day I picked up someone's unfinished project cAfE RAcEr, and pic of how she sits now. She's almost ready to ride after a full restoration/rebuild. Just waiting for new slow jets in the mail, then I can throw the rack back on.
Tanks and side covers will be painted once the bike is dialed in.

Hindle exhaust from Ripple Rock Racers. I'm still tuning the carbs (clogged slow jets in this vid) so it will just get better from here
81 CB650 stiffer rear shock options?
I backed myself into a corner and looking for an easy solution. I have minimal clearance from rear tire to seat frame. I static bounce tested it and it almost hits in a really big bounce. My shocks are original from 1981 and already on maximum preload setting. Under normal riding I don't anticipate it to ever hit. But...
What are my options that don't require cutting the frame? These stock shocks are pretty soft so I'm thinking/hoping a stiffer sprung shock will be a good solution. I'm not against a slightly longer shock as these 650 Customs already ride low in the rear.
What shock brands does everyone recommend?
1981 CB650 Custom wiring question
I bought this bike in pieces and non-running as a "cafe racer" unfinished project. The main harness was hacked up and all the lights were missing. I'm trying to put it back together and need some guidance on these connectors that terminate within the headlamp housing.
This is a new-used main harness and looks to be complete and original. My controls are also new-used original.
I know orange and blues are turn signals, green are grounds, and the headlight connector is obvious. What about the brown and black wires from the main harness? Do any of these plugs connect from the left controls to main harness, within the housing? I see that some of the connectors are designed to accept two male bullets.
I don't have the factory turn signals so it's not as simple as matching connectors.
TIA for any help!
Home stretch on '81 CB650C restoration / brat build
I picked up someone's unfinished project and hoped it was an easy fix - you know, rebuild the carbs and fire it up. Well,, it had no compression so I pulled the motor and sure enough it was junk on the inside. Rings were seized. I replaced the jugs/pistons with new-used and threw it back together with some paint.
No stopping now! The deeper I dug, the deeper the hole got... Although everything was mostly original and untouched, it hadn't run since the mid 90s, judging by the production dates on the tires. Everything had to be rebuilt - brakes, forks, alternator, carbs... everything. And as some of you may know, 1981 and 1982 were the redheaded stepchilds of the SOHC CBs and the aftermarket is not as comprehensive as literally every other year and model of CB.
It's a never ending game of "let's wait for more parts!" and "let's see what we find next." But we're still making good progress!
I'm currently wiring the bike with a new-used harness. The previous owner really did a number on the wiring. I still have bodywork and paint for the tank and side covers, then she should be just about done with the fabwork. I'm going with candy cherry over gold basecoat, with gold pinstripes and Honda logo on the tank. I'm still undecided if I should do painted CB650 logo on the side covers. What do y'all think?
Anyway, the last pic is how she looks currently.
