Really struggling
Hi guys! I am a new grad who has been working since February and on my own since June. I work in the NICU overnight.
I absolutely love what I do. But I feel like I’m always falling short. I had the youngest baby I’ve ever taken care of and it was a challenge for me.
I think sometimes experienced nurses forget that new grads have to learn EVERYTHING. I don’t know all the tips and tricks and nuances. I follow orders, I’m safe, detail oriented and know when to notify if something isn’t right.
I’m a sponge. Once you tell me something and show me once I’m bound to remember. I write down everything I learn after my shifts so I can continue applying as I grow. I see every shift as an opportunity to learn something new and carry the knowledge with me.
I think last night the personalities I was working with didn’t help. I’m very sensitive and quiet. I observe and process. I see things others may not. I worked with a very blunt, strong personality last night and it made me feel really dumb. I got to the point where I shut down emotionally. I would receive a critique and not know how to respond besides saying thank you. Not because I’m not grateful for the advice- I just felt at the end of the shift that I couldn’t take even one more correction because of how overwhelmed I was. I cried a couple of times.
I hope my coworkers know I’m genuinely trying my best. I don’t know everything and at the same time I’m eager to learn- I just need patience.
I’m always scared I’ll get fired. I’m not in danger of that and haven’t made any mistakes or received any remarks from anyone that I’m in trouble or heading towards that. I’m just always always always afraid. It’s just all too much.
