The End of 'Bhaipo Tax' and 'Danda Tax'? Suvendu Adhikari-led BJP Govt Cracks Down on Highway Extortion Nakas in West Bengal

According to a recent report by India Today, the newly formed BJP government in West Bengal under Suvendu Adhikari has ordered a strict zero-tolerance crackdown on illegal highway collection points.

For years, truck operators entering Bengal from neighboring states like Jharkhand faced severe harassment, threats, and forced payments at unauthorized bamboo barricades—informally dubbed the "Bhaipo tax" (referring to Abhishek Banerjee) and "danda tax."

According to the Federation of Truck Operators Association, the "Bhaipo tax" has already vanished following the May 9 transition, and operations are easing at key borders like NH-2. How do you see this impacting Bengal's logistical efficiency and business environment in the long run?

18M | West Bengal | Looking for genuine connection and good conversation

About me: I am an 18-year-old guy based in West Bengal. I am currently navigating the chaotic waters of a drop year, putting absolutely all of my energy and focus into cracking the NEET exam. It is a pretty grueling process, so a lot of my daily routine involves staring at biology textbooks, taking endless mock tests, and drinking way too much caffeine. Because my schedule is so heavily focused on studying right now, I really value the downtime I do get and want to spend it connecting with someone genuine and interesting.

My Interests: When I am not completely buried in medical prep, I am a massive tech and audio nerd. I take my audio gear very seriously—if you haven't experienced your favorite songs through a good set of IEMs, we need to have a serious talk. I also love photography and have a keen eye for visual aesthetics. Recently, I've been picking up the guitar, trying to learn some classic cinematic themes to stay sane. Speaking of which, I am a huge fan of cinematic thrillers and movies that actually make you think. I will happily overanalyze a plot twist or cinematography with you for hours. Also, if you play chess, consider this a friendly warning: prepare to get completely humbled on the board.

What I am looking for: I am hoping to find someone who is easygoing, ambitious, and genuinely great to talk to. Since my days are pretty intense with exam prep, I am looking for a connection where we can just decompress, share a few laughs, and talk about everything and nothing. A solid sense of humor is an absolute must, and if you can match my sarcastic energy, even better. If you have some top-tier movie recommendations, want to debate music, or just want to chat about life and whatever goals you're working towards, definitely hit me up. Let's see if we click!

Ajke 25se Boishakh, so here's a reminder of Gandhiji's great sacrifice in 1919. 🤦‍♂️

TMC doesn’t seem to want mercy or peace — neither from the people nor the incoming government.

Just hours after Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant Chandranath Rath was shot dead, now another BJP worker Rohit Roy has been shot at in Basirhat.

This cycle of violence needs to stop. Bengal deserves peace and stability.

Recently, the West Bengal exit polls have sparked unexpected alarm across the border in the Bangladesh Parliament.

Rangpur MP Akhter Hossen (National Citizen Party) openly expressed concern that if the BJP forms the government in Bengal, they will push alleged illegal migrants back across the porous border, creating a "major humanitarian and refugee crisis" for Dhaka.

I made this editorial cartoon to capture the sheer panic happening across the border over the prospect of a secure border and strict deportation policies.

What are your thoughts on this? Does an open admission of fear from a Bangladeshi MP prove that the illegal influx was being shielded all along?

Context behind the cartoon: >

Yesterday (April 28), two journalists—Sushant Soni (News18) and Ashish Sav—were brutally assaulted by a mob in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand. Their "crime"? They asked Health Minister Irfan Ansari why there was a delay in giving compensation to the families of the Chatra air ambulance crash victims.

Instead of answering, the minister's supporters beat them nearly lifeless right in front of the minister and the police. Eyewitnesses reported the police just watched and went "shhh" instead of intervening. No immediate arrests, no FIR, complete silence from the leadership.

The absolute irony of preaching about "Free Speech" and "Saving Democracy" at the podium while your goons crush the press backstage.
