making a lo-fi beat from scratch on the OP-XY

make a lo-fi beat on the OP-XY with me. no plan, just a drum pack to get me started and about half an hour to get from a blank project to a first sketch.

I share my process as I go, what I'm thinking, and how I usually go about exploring a track. Picking sounds, laying down the base, how I setup my scenes and using song mode to play it out.

let me know what you think of this video and if you'd like more like this. It’s definitely the longest one I’ve done.

A dedicated sub for VJXY

Hey! I’m the maker of VJXY, a live visual instrument for OP-XY. This sub has been super supportive along the app’s journey and I’m so grateful.

I’m keen to share more as the app progresses, designs, ideas, work in progress, small updates etc. But I am mindful it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, so I’m starting a new dedicated subreddit for VJXY.

If you’re interested in a behind-the-scenes look at how the app is progressing, feature requests, feedback, etc please come along. I might still post big updates in this sub if that’s ok.

See you around!

Here’s a sneak peak. Any guesses at what we’re looking at 😉?

Btw I’m always open to feedback and feature requests, so please don’t shy away from sharing!

VJ-XY v1.1 update: a splash of color and movement

it’s been two weeks since VJ-XY, a live visual instrument for OP-XY (and other midi controllers), went live and the response has been amazing! But even better, I got some really good ideas from you on how to make it better and more fun. Today v1.1 update is out bringing a splash of color and movement.

what’s new:

introducing canvas clips: you can now layer stills and animated gifs into a single 16:9 visual. arrange, scale, rotate. trigger each layer live.

matrix clips now take any color you choose for background and dots. pick the color behind your video clips. blend your layers and footage against it.

also new:
· support for animated gifs
· new mirror vfx for a kaleidoscope effect.
· change photo timing
· blank matrix clip for the quiet moments
· cleaner perform mode.

plus performance and bug fixes.

and like every update, it's free. no subscription. you bought it, you own it.

once again thanks so much for the support, and keep the feedback flowing so we can take it even further!

what am I talking about you ask? vjxy.app

Robot Ostrich Dreams - sands - a synth story with OP-XY, VJ-XY and KO SIDEKICK

Got the KO SIDEKICK early this week so taking it for a spin. Song is sequenced by OP-XY and I play visuals live on VJ-XY (app).

In this track I'm running an fx send loop over usbc. The audio from OP-XY goes into the iPad, through a granular plugin and back into channel 2 on the sidekick so I can play with the fader and performance fx.

It's a great small portable mixer. It's lots of fun. It's not replacing my Octatrack for fx in live performances any time soon though.

how to play live visuals with OP-XY — VJ-XY

I've been building a visual instrument for the OP-XY and sharing progress here over the last few weeks.

It's finally working end to end, so I made a full walkthrough showing how it goes: building a set, connecting the OP-XY over midi, and playing live visuals by triggering clips from notes and moving vfx with cc1–cc4.

Wanted to share the result with the community that helped shape it. Happy to answer any questions about how it works.

Glitchy track with visuals on OP-XY

I’ve been listening to Japanese IDM quite a bit recently. Can’t say this is close, but landed here trying to go in that direction. Exploring drums on the OP-XY by resampling hats and percs with fx and then sequencing the chops in new ways. Same for melodies. Some weird sounds come out. Thoughts? Any tips and tricks to get that glitchy vibe?

Visuals are sequenced by the XY too.

VJ-XY — a live visual instrument for OP-XY

last week I shared I had started working on a companion app for OP-XY. The response was great and it’s come a long way since!

It’s called VJ-XY. A few things to iron out, but I thought the best way to show where it’s at is just to play with it.

In this take, I’m sequencing clips and vfx parameters from the external midi track, and playing some params live. scenes and patterns handle the clips changing as the song progresses. It’s turned out more fun than I expected.

Planning to release it on the app store in a week or two. one-time price, no subscriptions.

XY video companion app WIP

Hello sub, in preparation for a show where I wanted to add visuals to my live set with the OP-XY I got kinda frustrated that there was nothing close to the OPZ app (Photomatic) for the XY. So I’m building one. It’s likely only for iPad. It’s coming along nicely. Thus far you can sequence clips and live fx from the aux midi track via Bluetooth.

Keen to hear if people would be interested in an app like this, if there’s enough interest I’d consider polishing and publishing to App Store.

Here’s a sneak peak of the scene controls. The UI is OPXY inspired.
