Mist — Nouvel onglet minimaliste

Hey 👋

I’ve just released a new update for Mist.

The main addition: you can now privately share your custom setup with someone else, including your wallpaper and generated color palette.

You create a share link → they preview it → import it into their own Mist setup.

I also improved the theme editor with:

  • editable HEX colors
  • palette locking & variations
  • live preview
  • contrast warnings
  • better mobile UI

I’m also working on a community gallery / Hall of Fame where people will be able to optionally publish their wallpapers + setups for others to discover and import.

I’d really like some feedback from Chrome/Firefox users:

Would you actually use a community gallery for new-tab setups? And what would you want Mist to add next?

Mist 1.11.0, you can now share your new tab setup with others

Hey!

I’ve just released Mist 1.11.0, and the feature I’m most excited about is theme sharing.

You can now create your own Mist theme with a custom wallpaper + 4-color palette, generate a private link, and send it to someone else.

They can preview the theme and import the wallpaper + complete color configuration directly into Mist.

The links currently expire after 30 days, and you stay in control of deleting what you shared.

I also rebuilt the theme editor: automatic palette extraction, manual HEX editing, color locks, palette variants and live preview.

Over the next few weeks, I’d like to add a community gallery / Hall of Fame to the Mist website where people can optionally publish the wallpapers + configurations they create, so everyone can discover and import setups made by other users.

Any feedback from Firefox users is very welcome !

I fixed the two biggest problems with custom themes in Mist

When I last posted Mist here, someone pointed out that requiring a background to be exactly 1672 × 941 made custom themes unnecessarily difficult. They were right.

Since then, I’ve made a few significant changes:

  • Custom backgrounds can now be any PNG or JPG size and are cropped proportionally
  • Existing shortcuts can be edited without deleting and recreating them
  • Shortcuts can use custom icons
  • The new-tab title and favicon can also be customized
  • Drag-and-drop now shows more precise placement indicators

Preferences and custom images stay in the browser, and Mist has no product analytics. Remote shortcut favicons are optional and can be disabled.

I’d especially like feedback from people using 2K or ultrawide screens: does the automatic wallpaper crop behave as you would expect?

I updated my Firefox new-tab add-on after the feedback on its first release

I shared the first Firefox release of Mist last week and received much more feedback than I expected. Some of the criticism was completely fair, so I’ve incorporated it into the latest update.

Mist now accepts custom backgrounds at any resolution, crops them without stretching, lets you edit existing shortcuts directly, and supports custom shortcut icons, tab titles, and favicons.

I’d particularly appreciate feedback about new-tab loading speed and wallpaper quality on high-resolution displays.

I built a calmer Edge new tab without the news feed

I wanted an Edge new tab that was useful without becoming another content feed, so I built Mist.

It provides grouped shortcuts, search through your configured engine, a clock, optional weather, and custom themes. You can also upload any wallpaper, generate a matching color palette, and customize individual shortcut icons.

Full disclosure: I’m the developer. Mist has no account, advertising, subscription, or product analytics. Preferences and custom images remain local, and optional remote shortcut favicons can be disabled.

It can be installed in Edge through the Chrome Web Store:

For Edge users: what part of the default new-tab experience would you most want a replacement to preserve ?

Mist minimal new tab v1.7 is out

I’ve released version 1.7 of Mist, my privacy-friendly minimal new-tab extension.

You can now:

  • Upload your own PNG or JPG background
  • Automatically extract a four-color UI palette
  • Adjust every generated color
  • Preview the theme before applying it
  • Keep everything stored locally in your browser

Firefox and Zen are also soon coming soon i'm waiting the validation of the store before publish it.

The update also adds two built-in themes: Sunset Apex and Crimson Oath.

I’d love feedback on the generated palettes and the overall custom-theme workflow.

My very first Firefox Add-on - Mist minimal new tab

Hi everyone,

I’ve just published the first Firefox release of Mist, a minimal and customizable new-tab extension I’ve been building.

Mist replaces the default new-tab page with a cleaner and more personal dashboard, while keeping everything simple and privacy-friendly.

Main features:

  • Customizable shortcuts and groups
  • Built-in themes
  • Optional weather information
  • Local storage for your settings and images
  • No account, ads, subscriptions, or product analytics

The project originally started as a small Chrome extension, but after receiving feedback from users, I wanted to make it available to Firefox users as well.

I would be glad to hear some feedbacks!

One month after launching my first extension (Mist minimal new tab) : what should I focus on next?

A month ago, I published my first browser extension.

At first, it was mainly an experiment to understand how extension development, publishing, and distribution worked. But when the first users started showing interest and sharing positive feedback, I felt responsible for turning it into a genuinely polished product.

Now, I’m wondering what the best next step is.

I don’t want to post about every small update and make my communication feel repetitive or spammy. At the same time, regular posts seem to be one of the most effective ways to reach new users, especially as an independent developer with no advertising budget.

Another issue is that the extension still has zero ratings on the Chrome Web Store. Some users have given me positive feedback directly, but none of them have left a public review yet.

I’d really appreciate any advice or feedbacks.

Mist v1.5 is out — better weather permissions, free high-quality themes, and redesigned settings

Hey everyone!

I’ve just released Mist v1.5, and this update was largely shaped by the feedback I received from the community. Thank you to everyone who tested the extension and shared suggestions.

What’s new in v1.5?

  • Improved weather location Mist can now use an approximate location based on your IP, only after you give permission. This removes the location permission popup that previously appeared every time the extension started.
  • New high-quality wallpaper themes I added a collection of more polished themes and wallpapers. They are called “Premium Themes,” but they remain completely free.
  • Redesigned theme selection flow You can preview a theme, see its colors and atmosphere, and apply it through a clearer and more intuitive interface.
  • The original minimal start page is staying The new themes are completely optional. Anyone who prefers the simple, distraction-free design can continue using the classic page.
  • Cleaner settings menu The settings interface has been reorganized to make customization simpler and easier to navigate.

I tried to add more personality without taking away the simplicity that Mist was originally built around.

You can try it here:

I’d really appreciate your feedback, especially on the new theme workflow and settings experience. And if you haven’t tried Mist yet, feel free to give it a shot!

Mist a minimal new tab extension, looking for feedback

Hey everyone,

A few days ago I shared Mist, a minimal new tab Chrome extension I built.

Since then, I’ve kept improving it and I now have a small but real user base:

  • 29 installs
  • 26 weekly users
  • 61 page views in the last 30 days
  • Users from several countries, mainly the US, but also France, Sweden, India, and others

Mist is designed to be a clean and focused new tab page with:

  • a minimal dark interface
  • quick access to your main links
  • grouped shortcuts
  • a search bar
  • a lightweight, distraction-free layout

I know the numbers are still small, but it’s motivating to see that people are actually installing and using something I built.

I’m mainly looking for honest feedback:

  1. Is the value proposition clear enough?
  2. Would you personally use a minimal new tab like this?
  3. What would make you keep it installed?
  4. Does the design feel useful, or is it too simple?
  5. Any feature you would expect in this kind of extension?

Chrome Web Store link: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/mist-%E2%80%94-start-page/boffmmgbnbcgjkcllimodfgpeffoeflb?hl=fr

Thanks to anyone who takes a look. I’m trying to improve it based on real feedback, not just build in my own bubble.

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share Mist, my first startpage / new tab extension.

I tried to make something clean, calm and useful: quick search, weather, grouped shortcuts and a minimal interface to stay focused.

I’d love to get your feedback on the design, UX and overall layout. What would you improve, add or remove?
