Trunk floor Update#3: The Hifonics ZX-12 Dual is alive 😂🔊

Following up on the last update:

Everything is finally installed and running.

Honestly, I wasn’t sure how well a setup like this would work in a sedan, but the bass comes through into the cabin way better than expected.

At higher volume the whole trunk lid starts flexing like it’s made of water. 😂

Definitely one of the craziest upgrades I’ve done to the car so far.

What started as a cardboard template and a rough sketch is now a fully working system.

More upgrades coming soon for the 190E project. 😎

Trunk cover Update #2: Wiring and audio install finally underway 🔊

Small update on my 1989 Mercedes 190E project.
After building the custom trunk floor in the last update, I finally started wiring and installing the audio system.

The setup is a Hifonics ZX-12 Dual powered by two Soundigital 800.1 EVO5 amplifiers. I ran the power cable on the driver’s side and the RCA/remote cables on the passenger side to avoid interference.

Still some finishing touches left, but seeing everything come together after starting with a simple cardboard template feels pretty satisfying.

Next update: the finished system in action. 😎

From cardboard template to a custom trunk floor in my 1989 Mercedes 190E

Picked up a Hifonics ZX-12 Dual enclosure recently and wanted to prepare the trunk before the actual install.

Started with a cardboard template, transferred it to plywood and built several access hatches so I can still reach tools, wiring and storage underneath.

The subwoofer and amplifiers are not installed yet – this is just the first stage of the project.

For now I’m leaving the wood exposed until I decide whether to wrap it, carpet it or leave it as is.

Last picture is the highly advanced engineering drawing that started the whole thing. 😅

Any suggestions before the audio equipment goes in next weekend?

My 190E got a little louder today

Went to the ACE Cafe swap meet today looking for a subwoofer for my 1989 Mercedes 190E 2.6.

After walking around all morning we found absolutely nothing.

At lunch I checked Facebook Marketplace and found two Hifonics Zeus 12” bandpass subs for CHF 200 each. My friend Thomas and I looked at each other and basically said: “Well… I guess we’re going on a road trip.”

A few hours later we arrived, shook the seller’s hand and immediately realized we were in for one of those stories you’ll be telling for years. Let’s just say his choice of tattoos was… memorable. 💀❌

Anyway, both subs worked perfectly, so we bought both of them.

Now one is sitting in the trunk of my 190E and the other one barely fit’s on the back seat of my friend’s Volvo 240 for the drive home.

Started the day at a swap meet with no subwoofer.
Ended the day with two Hifonics Zeus bandpass boxes.

Car guy logic at its finest. 😂

What do you think, good deal for CHF 200?

I think this might be the best set of photos I’ve taken so far.

Took these today at Furka Pass, Switzerland.

The weather was constantly changing between rain, fog and dark storm clouds, which made for some incredible conditions.

I photographed a few different cars throughout the day, but the frozen turquoise M4 in front of the Belvedere Hotel is probably my favourite shot.

Shot on a Nikon D5600.

Any feedback is appreciated!

Found a Mercedes 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II (#329/500) parked at a church in Switzerland today

A friend texted me that there was an Evo II parked at a local church, so I grabbed both of my cameras and rushed over there.

Turned out to be car #329/500 with around 100,000 km on the odometer.

Still can’t believe I found one of these just sitting in a church parking lot in Switzerland.

Took some photos while I had the chance!

Weird noises

My W201 190E 2.6 sometimes makes a strange buzzing/whirring noise while driving or idling.
It’s not constant and seems completely random.

The weird thing is: after shutting the car off and starting it again, the noise disappears completely.

Car is a 1989 Mercedes 190E 2.6 automatic with around 212k km.

Has anyone experienced something similar on an M103/W201?
Fuel pump? ABS? Hydraulic system? Vacuum related?

I attached a video with the sound. Any ideas are appreciated 😅

Just put new wheels on my 190E and made a little edit.

Tried to match the vibe with some 80s music 👀

I’m planning to lower it ~40mm and go for an AMG-style look next.

What do you think about the video and the car overall?

Anything I could improve (edit or car setup)?
