My love hate relationship with dry needling
To start off with I have pelvic floor dysfunction which highly plays into my constipation. I had abdominal surgery back in late February and I'm currently going through another round of pelvic floor physical therapy as my pelvic floor post surgery said I hate you now and regressed back to how it had been around 2 years ago before I started treatment.
On Tuesday I saw my pelvic floor therapist again and she did a round of dry needling in both of my inner thighs along with massaging my abdominal muscles to break up the scar tissue from the surgery. This was the first time I've had dry needling done in both legs during the same appointment usually we just do my right leg which is my bad leg and the massage. Neither were fun. Both hurt. A lot. But it usually helps. I have issues with hypertonia especially in my upper legs and pelvic floor and the way we are treating it currently is by dry needling along with stretches and cupping at home.
Now to the fun part, the first few days post dry needling my constipation is practically cured but I get the trade off of mild random muscle spasms of the pelvic floor, bloating and nausea. The bloating and nausea are why I'm awake currently and pacing around my apartment instead of sleeping. Don't get me wrong I love the fact that it makes my muscles work properly and so I can have a relatively pain free bowel movement, but I hate the other gi symptoms.
Anyway that was my rant about my love and hate of dry needling yes I'm still going to go back because a few days of discomfort for weeks of mild relief from the severe constipation and pain from the hypertonia is absolutely worth it. Take my opinion or not all I know is that dry needling in my inner thighs is the most effective and fastest way to break the constipation for me.
