Constipated and stressed out

I'm in my 30s, tried a few things at home, miralax, a fleet saline enema. Nothing came out, I sit on the toilet and I can feel it coming but it's just too painful, and I'd definitely have to strain and push to get it out, so embarrassingly enough going to head to the hospital, my brain is freaking out about all variables and what might happen, honestly I'm stressed, worried, and unfortunately scared of going.

2 Years of Chronic Constipation, Clean Scopes & Incomplete Evacuation —

I’ve been dealing with chronic constipation and severe bowel symptoms for around 2 years, and I’m trying to figure out whether this could be a pelvic floor problem such as pelvic floor dyssynergia/anismus.

Most of my investigations have been normal. Blood work, ultrasounds, an upper endoscopy about a year ago, and a colonoscopy 2 months ago were all essentially normal. The only finding was mild fatty liver. So anatomically, everything seems fine, but my bowel function definitely doesn’t feel normal.

My symptoms follow a very predictable pattern:

Morning:

I wake up with a strong urge to have a bowel movement. I sit down and can usually pass stool with one push, but then the urge suddenly disappears. A few minutes later, it comes back. This happens several times, and I end up making 3–4 separate trips before I feel that I’ve passed a substantial amount.

The stool is usually pasty and medium-brown rather than particularly hard.

After breakfast:

I often become extremely bloated shortly after eating. It feels like my bowel hasn’t properly cleared in the morning, and then eating triggers more movement and pressure.

Evening:

By roughly the same time every evening, my abdomen starts becoming much more active. If I can’t pass stool or gas, the bloating and pressure can become severe. My abdomen feels distended and my chest can feel very heavy, making it genuinely difficult to breathe. It feels as though the abdominal pressure is pushing upward against my diaphragm.

Another strange symptom:

When I’m lying flat on my back in bed, I can sometimes feel strong rectal pressure and an urge to go. But when I stand up, that sensation can disappear almost immediately.

Laxatives

I’ve previously been prescribed several medications, including prucalopride, Matiz Plus and lactulose.

Lactulose actually helped me clear things out in the evening for a few days, but it also caused 5–6 bowel movements with very acidic/burning stool, which irritated my internal hemorrhoids. Once I stopped it, the previous cycle returned.

I’m currently not taking daily constipation medication and am trying gentle walking and bodyweight exercises. I use lactulose 20 mL only as a rescue when things become particularly difficult.

I’m mainly trying to understand what direction I should take now Please help me with your advice as I did everything to my knowledge.

Thank you to the Mag 07 recommenders…

I’ll start this by saying, I was skeptical.

After 8 weeks of being very constipated (after a round of antibiotics that cause dysbiosis which is now the project at hand…), I’d given up on anything working.

I got the Mag 07 thanks to some commenters and recommendations here and…

Day one. Meh.

Day two. Yay.

Day three. Yay again!

I feel like for the first time in a LONG time, it’s not traumatizing to try to go to the bathroom and I actually feel “complete” after.

I’m going to continue for a week and then start working on gentle fiber but I desperately needed some movement.

To those who try it: 1. Experiment on dose. One capsule is plenty for me (I’m a very little lady!) but you may need 2-3. Box says three… I’m SO glad I didn’t start with three! 2. Don’t get discouraged after day one! 3. It does make you a little gurgly or bubbly in the guts while you sleep, just a forewarning.

Seeking advice

My daughter had not had any mobility for a week after she took one dose of mirlax , nothing stool softeners, and nothing then when several rounds of doing an enema , produced nothing but brown water she drank a bottle of magnesium citrate, which resulted in a terrible night going with lots of watery stool nothing solid, lots of gas, it’s been a day and she says that her digestive has restarted, what does she try next and has anyone worked with getting colonics for this?

Very constipated

Hi beautiful people, I have always been chronically constipated since a young age, despite all the fibers I eat, the water I drink, the exercises I do.

I even got a colonoscopy and everything was fine.

I need some great laxatives or relief medication.

I tried dulcolax, prune juice, magnesium pills, stool softeners etc...

is it effective

Is there such a thing as an injection treatment for constipation? I’m just asking because my constipation has been going on for almost 2 weeks now, and I’ve tried multiple remedies and medicines, but they haven’t helped much. My private doctor mentioned that they have an injection for constipation that costs around ₱2,500 here in the Philippines. If there is an injection for this, is it actually effective, and does it work directly to relieve the constipation?

Nearing two weeks of constipation

Hey guys.

So I've been having bowel movement issues for almost 2 weeks coming up this Thursday. I definitely goofed and ate a lot of grape seeds for breakfast for a few days and then noticed I couldn't go to the bathroom very well.

I've been able to poop but they come out in slivers in large quantities at times. I'm feeling pressure and discomfort now in my abdominal that comes and goes, and now noticing discomfort in my lower back. I'm passing gas and belching often from pressure I imagine.

Today I tried to make a bowel movement and I noticed a lite speck of mucus with some light colored blood. This has occurred just once so far.

I've been drinking a lot of water the past few days and also drinking a small amount of prune juice or eating some (I got the runs from overdoing it with juice and got mildly dehydrated so taking it easy now).

I was wondering if I should just go to the ER at this point or is there some relief/something to do about it? I can't remember the last time I was constipated let alone for this long. I feel so incredibly stupid eating grape nuts since I normally don't eat them let alone eat that much fibre. I'm low-key tripping about it now.

Max dose Linzess + Miralax + Mag Oxide and I’m STILL not emptying. SITZ test showed pelvic floor issues. GI appt today—what do I ask for?

Honestly at my wit's end and feeling so anxious and exhausted from this whole cycle. I have a follow-up with my GI this afternoon and I desperately need some advice on what to ask for, because what I’m doing right now is just not working.

Right now I’m taking 290mg of Linzess every morning, plus a cap of Miralax and 500mg of magnesium oxide (which was dropped from 1000mg) every single night before bed. The goal was to build up the Linzess (started at 72, went to 145, now at 290) so I could drop the Miralax and mag, but it hasn't worked at all. If I miss even one of these, everything completely stops and I’m screwed for an entire week.

The worst part- the Linzess doesn't even kick in on its own in the morning. Nothing happens until I eat breakfast. Once I eat, it triggers a sudden liquid movement, but I NEVER feel cleared out. It’s completely liquid, but it feels like my pelvic muscles are clamping shut and not allowing the rest to come out. I use a squatty potty, have tried bending my chest down towards my knees (which sometimes helps), have tried the “MOO” , but I’m still stuck feeling like a lot of it is trapped inside of me. I haven't had a normal solid bowel movement in forever—it’s just continuous liquid, yet I still feel backed up, insanely bloated, fatigued, anxious as hell and sometimes restless at night.

My GI ordered a SITZ marker test recently to check my motility. The markers moved through my upper and middle colon just fine, but almost all of them ended up completely stacked at the very bottom in my pelvic floor/rectum area. 14 of the 24 markers were still present in my x-ray 5 days after the swallow.

They referred me for an anorectal manometry, but the waitlist is brutal and I can't get in until December. The anxiety, depression, and physical discomfort from constant incomplete emptying are just wearing me down.

For anyone who’s dealt with pelvic outlet issue or failed Linzess: Is there another medication (like Motegrity, Trulance, etc.) that actually helped with the exit issue instead of just blasting water into the gut?

Has pelvic floor PT helped anybody here? Are there specific suppositories, enemas, or tools that helped you when you felt like you couldn’t expel it on your own?

What can I ask my GI to do TODAY so I don't have to keep suffering until December?

TIA for any advice or experience you can share!!

Can someone help me what to do now, tried fiber and no help but did it make things worse?

I hope someone can reply to me sooner than later as i am very anxious now.

I have had constipation since i was a kid, i only pass a stool once a week or less and it's always from pushing and often painful.

Only 5 days ago i learnt most people go every day and how bad mine is so i switched right to mostly eating fruits and vegetables and all fiber stuff since i normally lack it.

Then i found this subreddit and everyone says to not do that as that will make the mass harder and constipation even worse? So i panicked and i searched what to do instead and it said to drink a lot of water and hot water. So i did, but then i read here that the mass will just absorb the water too and become even bigger and more clogged.

I am shaking as i type this and feel nauseous and hot but not from anything wrong (yet) i am just panicking because i wanted to fix it myself once i learnt it's an issue but all i do is seem to make it worse and i'm genuinely scared because normally my stool is already really hard to pass and painful and now i'm reading it's going to be worse and i did call the ER and nurse said only if i experience extreme stomach pain to call and to keep drinking lots of water.

Please, could someone help? It's been 5 days on the new diet (mostly rye bread, corn, potatoes, carrots, bananas, yogurt, tea, porridge, chia seeds) and obviously no bowel moments, except on the 16th a bit that was also the staining kind. The er nurse said to keep drinking liquids but is that making it worse and am i in some danger? Like what do i do now? I cant get anything from the pharmacy rn. And should i still contact a doctor later either way? Thank you

Constipation worsen after colonoscopy help

Just for background information, I have had chronic constipation for the past 2 years and the only thing that actually helped me was going to a naturopath and taking medications that she recommended twice a day and I had to start drinking more than 2-3L water, getting my 5-7k steps in and eating more vegetables, salads, avoiding eating from outside as much as possible. Finally after 1.5 years of struggle, it was manageable with her meds.

Last week I had to get a colonoscopy because I had blood during BM and I did not want to take any meds forever so I wanted to get things checked. My GI said, they found ntg during the colonoscopy but they took a couple of biopsies just in case that I will get the results back in 2 months and she told me to eat wtv I want afterwards. However, the first 2 days after the colonoscopy I did not have any BM, I thought it was normal and then I took a laxative prescribed by GI because I knew food was just sitting in my colon. The next day I had a BM but they were a bit hard not like how they used to be with the laxative. Then I started taking the meds by my naturopath, but they are not working like they used to. I barely go once and the BM is so hard as if I’m not drinking water but I’m sure I’m drinking more than 3L a day, I get a lot of fiber in and I’m still doing my steps. I feel like colonoscopy messed up my system so bad that nothing is working😭

I do not know what to do, I’m hungry but my gut feels stuffed and I have no urge and back hurts from straining which I don’t want to do because that’s what caused the blood in the first place.

Bowel & Gut issues, sudden change in issues after 15 years.

Male 47. 19st 4lb. 6FT.

I had a gastric bypass in 2011, since then I've had permanent diarrhoea. I've always had other issues with my joints following 2 accidents in vehicles so I've been on opioid pain medication for the last 20 years. Every 6 hours I would take 1g paracetamol, 60mg codein, 100mg tramadol, 5mg zomorph. At night I also had oramorph. I could happily take all of those opiates and I still had diarrhoea, they never even slightly affected me.

Long story short I took the kick up the arse that was needed and I've lost half my bodyweight with the help of the bypass, because of this the pressure on my joints has been much better. I managed to quit the oramorph first, then I quit the zomorph around february, I managed to stop the cocodamol and just moved to paracetamol and now I'm tapering the tramadol. I've gone from 400mg a day to just 10mg a day, the 10mg stops the twitchyness and withdrawal symptoms and I hope to be off of that by the end of the week.

I am now more backed up than the M25 on a bank holiday Monday following a 9 lane closure.

I just don't get it, I'd got used to the new signals my body gave me when I'd had the runs for all those years and now I'm constipated and suffering with overflow diarrhoea. I permanently feel like I need to poo, every time I stand up or move my bowels start twitching and I have to go and strain only to pass another couple of tiny pebbles. I've tried stood softeners that the Dr prescribed me but all they seem to do is aggravate the overflow diarrhoea, all the laxatives seem to do is make it so that the overflow stuff is more aggressive coming out.

Honestly I'm so done with it, everything I do is preceded by the toilet. I can sit at my desk for a couple of hours, the doorbell will ring and I'll sort whatever and then I have to rush to the toilet, it's every time I do anything physical they start straining again and I'm exhausted with it!

thank you if you've read this far!

Help - chronic constipation for 6 months, only herbal supplements work but they're risky

I've been constipated for over 6 months. Metamucil and MiraLAX don't do anything for me no matter how much I try. The only things that actually work are herbal supplements with Cape Aloe, Buckthorn Bark, Cascara Sagrada, and Rhubarb Root.

Problem is, I just found out these ingredients are pretty dangerous:

Cascara Sagrada was banned by the FDA as unsafe

Long-term use of all of them can cause low potassium, heart problems, kidney/liver damage

I'm taking them daily and I'm worried

What's everyone else using that actually works and won't destroy my organs? Has anyone else had this where the "safe" options just don't work?

Constipation that wakes you up at night

Does anyone have gas and flatulence that wakes you up in the middle of the night yet you still can't produce a BM? I've been doing everything I've been instructed to do yet I'm still only able to pass gas. Feeling literally full of shit.

Need advice!!

Last Saturday (8/8) I visited an urgent care after experiencing two weeks of functional constipation. They did an xray and found a “moderate to large” stool burden. The doctor recommended miralax that day and the next, and a fleet enema. The first enema produced a small volume of liquid stool, and the second produced a larger volume of liquid stool. Nothing solid, and not all that significant in volume. I stopped the miralax after, as recommended by a nurses’ line.

That Monday-now, I’ve followed a low residue diet (rice pasta, white rice, rice chex, plain tofu, “JUST egg,” plain cheerios, sugar popsicles). This was also suggested by the nurses’ line. On Monday, I had no bowel movements. I called the urgent care doctor, who recommended a fiber supplement and high fiber intake immediately. At this point I was still feeling very full and bloated. I did not follow his recommendation. He seemed rushed and to have not cared.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, I had bowel movements after my morning black coffee. They were small, fragmented pieces of stool. On the softer side. Small in size. On Thursday, I passed a small dense piece. Very dense. Immediately following, I passed a pile of thick dense liquid “muddy” stool. Not a ton, but a significant amount.

On Friday & Saturday, I passed very dense solid pieces of stool twice a day. They were SMALL. And hard to pass—lots of straining. On Sunday, nothing. So I contacted an urgent care telehealth doc. He recxomended fruits & veggies—specifically spinach and prunes. And to start up the Miralax, which I did.

What should I do? I’m nervous to add fruits & veggies because it appears I have a blockage of hard stool, presumably from the burden. I was on low residue to not add to the burden. I’m conflicted!!! Please help!!!!

Help with choosing glycerin suppository or dulcolax

Hi everyone,

I had some mild cramping last Thursday which got a lot worse on Friday (pretty much felt it any I drank or ate anything). I managed to go to the toilet on Friday afternoon after having terrible cramps but it wasn't the best feeling although the cramping did subside.

But ive since not gone to the toilet and im feeling quite backed up- theres a low pressure at the bottom of my anus and no matter how much water/warm liquids or fibre rich food i consume, I cant go to the toilet.

If anyone has had similar symptoms, did taking an oral laxative or suppository work best for you? I have both to hand- admittedly I have no clue how to insert the suppository and am slightly terrified at the prospect, but on the other hand, I know the oral pill takes longer to work.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated 🙏

Nothing is working-pelvic floor issues

Issues for almost two months. I can feel stool in my rectum but my pelvic floor muscles are unable to contract and push it all out. I've been on Miralax daily, psyllium husk Senakot occasionally and I have a BM twice a week maybe 3 when my normal used to be complete evacuation every other day and my IBS C was in remission for years. I don't know what to do. My colonoscopy showed internal hemorrhoids but that was about it. Does anyone have any tips or exercises that would help?

Linzess is a nightmare

This is more of a vent,i guess. Maybe someone will relate.

I have EDS, and have tons of bowel issues. Severe slow motility constipation, redundant colon, visceroptosis (my colon fell in my pelvis), gastroparesis, etc.

I've tried probably every non surgical option,i've taken so many different laxatives, prokinetics, and nothing helped me. My intestines just don't move at all. I was taking prucalopride recently, but it only caused severe bloating (and i am already ALWAYS bloated, but it still managed to make me feel even worse.) My doctor is refusing to even consider an ostomy, but she also doesn't understand much about my conditions, because she is not a motility specialist, and has seen only one person with EDS besides me. Instead she prescribed me the highest dose of Linzess,290 mcg. I took it today, and it was immediately a nightmare. I've always had very bad experiences with osmotic laxatives,i get so much water in my intestines, but no way to get rid of the water,i haven't had urges to go to the bathroom for many many years now. But this is somehow even worse, i'm sorry for the details, but the water just started leaking out of my ass,and i didn't even notice at first. I am now bound to the toilet,i am very dehydrated (i weight only 43 kg due to my gastroparesis),if i drink water it will immediately start pouring out of my ass, mixed with bile(i think?),because it is very acidic, and burns my ass. I was crying because it hurts so much,i can't even wipe.

I wish doctors would stop torturing me with meds. I want an ostomy, and yes,i understand that it comes with issues as well,i know there are many risks. But what's the other choice? Just continue being in sever epain and discomfort literally ALL of the time? Or at least have a chance for relief? I already was offered a stoma back in my home country,by 2 best colon surgeons in the country, but they decided not to do it due to not knowing what complications i can have due to my EDS. I don't know...i am so tired. I am still young but it feels like my life is over. I can't go out,do anything. Just suffer 24/7.

What to eat?

I have slow motility slow transit chronic constipation , I also have SIBO methane. My doctors claim that they don’t know what’s causing my slow transit constipation. I know what’s causing it , it’s
My psych meds. This has been an issue for me for the last 4 years. And so I’ve come to the decision with my psychiatrist to come off my medication in hopes that my slow transit constipation improves and or resolves. In the mean time, what do I eat? I tried taking out all fiber and carbs , that back fired . If I eat fiber I’m extremely bloated and have terrible gas pains that gas x doesn’t even touch. I’m
Afraid if I don’t eat fiber , I won’t have regular bowel movements. So what do you guys eat? I have tried low fodmap for months, no change. I’m at a loss.
I take motegriyy 2mg and ibsrela twice a day
