This truck wheel cap was reconstructed from 3D scan data to create a replacement CAD model for 3D printing.

The original part was deformed, so following the scan exactly would have transferred that distortion into the replacement.

Instead, we used a reliable region of the scan as the nominal reference and rebuilt the cap around its intended circular geometry.

This short shows the Scan-to-CAD process from the original scan to the corrected CAD model.

It’s an interesting question because the lowest deviation doesn’t always mean the best CAD model.

A 3D scan represents the physical part as it exists — including wear, deformation, manufacturing variation, and potentially damaged geometry.

When reverse engineering, the goal is often to reconstruct the original design intent rather than reproduce every deviation captured by the scan.

For other applications, especially freeform or custom-fit geometry, staying very close to the scanned surface may be exactly what’s required.
