My captain threw the team championship for a rival club. Now I want revenge.
I am part of an individual sport where we also compete as a team, and we recently went to an important championship where the entire team goal was to win the overall title.
Before the event our vice captain actually called me and asked me to come because my participation was critical for us to secure the points needed to win. I travelled about 200 km to get there.
When I arrived I was competing in a category where I was clearly the strongest competitor. My gold medal was basically guaranteed. Another teammate was in the exact same category but his performance level was significantly below mine meaning if I competed he would naturally drop down one position.
However he was still easily good enough to fight for and win a bronze medal.
The captain bizarre argument was that if I competed this teammate would lose his higher silver medal position become discouraged and potentially choke on his attempts. So the captain decided that I should not compete at all.
I could not wrap my head around it. The entire point of going to a team championship is for the team to win the championship not to coddle one individual medal color at the expense of everyone else.
To make matters worse the captain is two years younger than me in the sport. When I challenged his completely illogical decision it turned into a massive heated verbal argument. Let be clear I had every physical right and capability to slap him or put him in his place right there. I had the anger and the physical control not to do it and I knew his threats about ruining my future or stripping my past achievements were empty because he simply did not have that kind of power.
I could have forced the issue stayed and competed anyway because he could not actually stop me. But looking at the toxic dynamic I realized I did not want to force a victory into the hands of a captain who clearly did not even want his own team to win. I chose to walk away.
Besides I had another major competition starting the very next day around 7:00 AM and the mess he dragged out had already finished around 12:00 AM. I grabbed my bag and left.
I had to make the 200 km journey back home and on the way I was involved in a serious accident and ended up badly injured.
After everything settled I found out the most infuriating part: If I had competed our team would have won the championship by a landslide.
To top it all off there is a massive glaring conflict of interest. The captain trains separately under a private coach rather than with the rest of our team. Guess which club ultimately won the championship? The one owned and run by his private coach.
I have no smoking gun proof that he was paid off or deliberately threw the tournament so I am not stating that as an absolute fact. But the circumstances look wildly suspicious: he barred the team best competitor threw a power trip cost us the entire championship and the exact team that benefited was connected to his private coach. Meanwhile he barely did his job as captain to begin with offering zero support to the rest of us.
I am furious. I walked away because I was focused on my athletic career not out of weakness. I am looking for clever ways to exact consequences destroy his reputation strip away his fake authority and make sure everyone knows what he did.
If you were in my shoes how would you handle this? What are some smart ways to make someone face real consequences for betraying their own team?
Olympic weightlifting barbell in Sri Lanka?
Anyone in Sri Lanka doing Olympic weightlifting or CrossFit who can help me get a proper competition-style Olympic barbell?
My current bar is broken and I need a replacement. Looking for something like the bars used in competitions (good spin, solid knurling), not basic gym bars.
If you know where I can buy one, or have contacts / used equipment for sale, please let me know. I can travel anywhere in the country.
Thanks.
