Wondering if it would be worth it to use proxy ?

Hello everyone !

I've started the hobby a couple month ago and I'm loving it ! I have around 1300 point of models already and I can't stop wanting to paint more !

The thing is, I feel I'm hitting a wall about which models I could buy for my army. I already manage through online deal and trade with player to get my hand on a full Royal court, a combat patrol, a couple Heavy Lokhust as well as some character with an Orikan, hexmark and a royal warden. So I'm cover on what I feel are good basic models for a necron army and enough for a 1k list.

I was checking about what to add to my army, and it's were I have some doubt. From what I saw, a lot of good Necron models are either expensive, like the c'tan shard at around 100€ here, expensive for what's in the box, like the flayed one at 55€ for 5 models, hard to get because they come in an expensive box, like the Transcendant C'tan, or just impossible to find like the Lokhust Lord. And checking online deal and occasion here, I only see scalpers selling boxes one models at a time, it's almost impressive how hard it his to come by interesting deal !

I know I could just be patient and take my time, but it's not just a price problem. As a new painter I'm also worried about messing up on expensive models like a Void Dragon and ruining such an pricey thing. And i can't really buy a bunch to train myself nor use other figs as I don't have any. And to be honest after painting 40 necron warrior I don't think more would help...

That's why I am wondering if I should try to use proxy for some of those models. That way I can get hard to get models more easily and pay less for the more expensive one, which mean mistake wouldn't be as costly and I wouldn't feel that bad if after cleaning the paint of my mistakes the model isn't as good as before. Beside some proxy are just better looking than normal model. No offense to those who love the Transcendant C'tan or the Deceiver but those just don't look good among necron for me...

BUT, because there's always a but, I'm also worried that using proxy won't be a perfect solution. Mostly, I'm worried that I may not be allowed to use them at my local shop since even if the shop itself don't forbid those, it's up to your opponent if you can use proxy or not against them. Also the rules on proxy are a bit too vague for my taste. Sure I must use the same base as the original model, but what about the shape ? It must be 'similar' apparently but how much ? If my model is smaller than the real one, is it a problem ? Taller ? I just don't want to buy a proxy only for it to be seen as illegal.

I found some peoples recommending kitbash too to replace some models but it's also look a bit expensive, like to replace a model I should get two or more other models ? I understand if you have a large collections with leftovers bits but for me it don't look like a good solution.

So after rambling for so long I guess I'm just looking for advice. Do you use proxy ? Which one ? Where do you find them ? Is it a good idea for a new player or should I stick to licensed models for now ? Cause without the option of 3D printing thing I'm also limited on what I can get access too.

Thanks for reading that much, and feel free to ask me anything if you need details !

Any advice about how to remove paint from minis buy online ? I tried alcohol but some of the paint just won't come off and any attempt at painting on the last coats give a bumpy texture.

Please tell me there's a way to remove those last coats of paint without using dangerous or minis damaging stuff , Orikan deserve better !

After receiving so much advice on my last post, I thought it was only fair to share my progress here ! Metalic blue and silver color schemes with orange plasma and some gold for accessories.

First time painting minis so please be indulgent ! It wasn't easy to find inspiration for this schemes online, soI had to improvise a bit on occasion, which turn out surprisingly good ! Still working on learning how to do lighting, which his why most models lack any and for some barely have any shading too.

How to design a fun final boss to finish my campaign ?

I usually don't have too much trouble coming up with my NPCs, but I'm about to wrap up a campaign that's been going on for two years, and I'm really struggling to find a satisfying way to create my final bosses, who will bring the last story arc to a close. I’ve tried drawing inspiration from the examples of final bosses in the books, but they’re all tied to such specific concepts or themes that it’s hard for me to adapt them to my own ones.

So I’m looking for advice or ideas on how to proceed, since I’ve never designed a boss of this high a level before (it needs to be level 60, since my players have just reached the level cap), and I really don’t want to rush things or ruin the campaign’s conclusion. If it helps, the final boss will initially be a corrupted saint who believes that summoning her god will bring salvation, and my players will try to stop her.

Feel free to ask me any questions if you need more details or information ! I'm not sure what's really relevant or not here.

I painted my first models but end up disappointed by my orange glow. I feel it ruin the whole thing but all the guide I find online either don't work for me or require a lot of different paints and technique I don't have. Any advice for a beginner ? Cause I start to think I should give up on this...

I did made test on spare weapons and bits before but nothing seems to truly work. Maybe I'm just too new and should wait until I'm more experienced to attempt this but It's frustrating cause this kind of glow didn't seem that complex from what I saw.

I'm also looking for advice about how to clear the paint if I truly need to pick an easier color schemes, cause I tried using isopropyl alcool on some models I buy that were badly painted but even after days of cleaning some of the paint just refuse to come off and make my painting attempt uneven.

Happy to hear any comment you may have, I try to reply to any question.
