How Do You Feel About Old Cartoons and Their Racism
I am white. I grew up watching Tom and Jerry quite a bit, among other old cartoons from the 30s, 40s, and 50s, such as Looney Toons, and the old Paramount Cartoons. As for Tom and Jerry, I watched the largely sanitized versions on Cartoon Network that removed the caricatures, apart from the character "Mammy Two Shoes", the black woman who had to deal with their antics (or rarely aired shorts that featured her) or watched the original versions and was too young to recognize the stereotypes. But as I got older, I found the uncensored versions online and saw the original versions with all the stereotypes, such as blackface gags, and the original voice of the black woman, only known as "Mammy Two-Shoes". I was wondering, what do you guys think of these old cartoons now that they have aged horribly, and how would've your grandparents and great-grandparents feel if they were watching these cartoons, among other racist media of the time if they were in a theater in the 1930s or 1940s?
