90's European (Italian?) drama
Estimated release year/decade: probably between 1989 and 1996.
When I watched it: I am pretty sure I saw it between 1991 and 1995, and also pretty sure it was a new movie
Language spoken: not sure, but I'm leaning towards Spanish or Italian. Might have been English.
Is it live action? Yep!
From what country: I think it's Western European, but there's a slim chance it was American
Genre: Drama, possibly Period Drama. Sort of an arty movie with limited release, the sort of thing that got nominated for a few awards.
Details I Remember:
- Setting is something like a monastery or a villa in the countryside. Sometimes inside, sometimes outside, never anywhere else. There is a small group of people here, and there is a sense that the place is too big and empty for that few people. The outdoors shots are pretty and full of natural beauty. The inside shots are a little dark and the place has a feel of being not very well kept up.
- I think it's set in the 20th century, but I don't think it was set in the (then) current era.
- Most of the action centers around a very old man with limited mobility at the end of his life. It's kind of a sad story, but not a heavy story, and I remember moments that were supposed to feel comic, but didn't really land with me. I think there are a few family members at this villa/monastery, maybe reluctantly brought together to accomplish some task, maybe a task involving the elderly man who, I think, lives there full time. It's kind of maybe a comedy of errors were the family members are all busy and fussing, while the old man just kind of ... is.
- The end of the movie is strange and was offputting to me at the time, and, unfortunately the only scene I remember. The elderly man has a moment of defiant rebellion where he somehow sneaks outside to enjoy the fresh air and sun in a field, and then he also pees. It's his big moment, being able to at last pee outside and then I think the movie ends after that, hero's journey apparently concluded.
Any ideas?
