When a character do horrible things for the future they want but admit that there is no place for them in that future.

Example:

1. Dune- Leto II: He built an oppressive regime to make humanity distrust charismatic leaders like himself and his father, ensuring humanity could never be ruled by people with precognition like them. He did all this knowing there was no place for him in that future.

2. Warhammer 40K – Fabius Bile: He is a mad scientist who wants to create a race of superior humans that will one day take over the galaxy and replace old, dying humanity. When talking to one of his creations, he tells her that he, like his Space Marine brethren, will be the bones that build the foundation of the new world he dreams of.

  1. Tactics Ogre – Denam Pavel: He is the hero who led the rebellion that united the Valerian Isles and ended the decade-long civil war. However, in the best ending, he leaves the kingdom because he wants a peaceful reign for his sister, realizing he has no place in that peace after everything he did to achieve it.

A game with a mechanic you like a lot and wish more games would copy that mechanic. My example is the pair up mechanic in Fire Emblem. I really like the ability to pair up characters in an RPG so that not everyone have to be PC-sexual. Imagine if you can pair up the other characters in Persona games.
