Anyone else in post Days Gone gaming limbo?

So most people who finish Days Gone and want more seem to find a way.. harder difficulty modes, resetting hordes, limiting themselves to different tactics.. but I just can't be bothered with any of that; can't be bothered grinding through the same game, same storylines again as much as I enjoyed it.

So here I am reading this reddit from time to time, making the odd comment (and this post.) I had a period where I would boot it back up every day or two for 15 or 20 minutes and wander around the end game map looking for odd bits of action wanting to bask in that atmosphere more than anything.

I tried Dying Light but I had enough after about an hour. It just didn't scratch that same itch.

I guess ultimately this amounts to another 'I wish there was Days Gone 2' post.

It's been about a month now. Might pull the Rock Chuck out for half an hour of opportunity kills at the weekend.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

Dolphin checksum calculations very slow?

So I have a large .ISO file and wanted to confirm the checksum via Dolphin with <right click on file> -> properties -> checksums tab -> enter known checksum.

On a 30GB iso this ground away on the processor for around 2 minutes on a high spec desktop PC with no result so I exited and instead of entering a checksum I just tried hitting 'calculate' on the SHA256 checksum. Waited well over a minute and again felt like this is too long.

In contrast, running sha256sum <filename> in the terminal returned the correct result in around 10-11 seconds.

If anyone can confirm / deny this disparity on a very large file, please let me know your distro and what you saw. I'm on aerynOs which I doubt anyone else is running but wanted to know if this is a general KDE issue or a distro specific one before reporting appropriately.

Cheers

EDIT - I've raised a bug report.

Do zombie ears display in main window?

So, when I was not far from completing the game I killed a horde and found a bunch of cards (zombie ears) where they had been. Couldn't pick them up because I had maxxed out, but it took me a while to realise what they were.

Previously I could only see the ears as points on the mini-map so it seems it was only once I maxxed out that anything appeared in the main (gameplay) window.

Is this how it's supposed to be or is this a bug?

How do you handle not being drowned by the waves?

So I've got very minimal surf experience, but on a trip to Australia a while back I hired a boogie board on Bondi beach.. and let's just say I never really managed to get the thing far enough out to get a worthwhile run.

It was long enough ago that I can't really remember how big the waves were, but big.. I'm used to swimming in Devon and Cornwall in the surf but this was a different beast altogether. I would keep getting thrown under by a wave then I would be under the water for a long time.. total guess but let's say 40s that seemed like a minute and a half. Sometimes two or 3 consecutive waves would sweep me down before I even managed to break the surface.

I'm a decently strong swimmer so the question is, how do the pros handle this? Any tips for avoiding it, or getting out of it? Any anecdotes if this has happened to others.. does it still happen to the pros?

Finished main story, thoughts on the game

Atmosphere and open world in a zombie apocalypse.. 3 big draws for me and it's really well put together in that aspect. Some time into it, the shine of the samey missions gets a little old for me and you feel like an errand boy, but I understand it's hard to keep a player busy.

Skills progression feels good but once I got the BFG and the Chicago Chopper the new weapons were a disappointment and usually with worse stats than what you already have. I would prefer the game do something to force the order a little more so the newly introduced weapons always feel bigger and better.

Hordes always seem to involve hit, run and gun with various traps adding to the mix but it would have been nice if that was changed up a bit with some where you could take them out from relative safety. I know that's possible but from what I've seen it usually involves something that feels like cheating (e.g. wheeling your bike up implausible inclines) rather than a logical solution.

Hunting for scrap and incendiaries got boring later in the game. It would be nice if something opened up at the camps to purchase these at some stage.

The worst part for me was when the credits rolled. I was shocked since I didn't think taking out the General would be 'end game' although obviously it's a big part of the story.. felt very abrupt with a lot of loose ends.. like all the stuff about the zombie mutations and migrations.. I thought that would go somewhere more. I stopped playing for a while but eventually came back to it. I actually like the fact that there are still missions after completing the main story.. feels kind of.. cosy?

A couple of standouts for me were going to find the kid the first time against the backdrop of the town, marauders and zombies and escorting out; plus the scene where you've got to give sniper cover at the dam.. they just change things up a little, plus the hordes of course.. that goes without saying.

Overall a really good game not without its flaws. Zombie battles always felt good but honestly human opponents often felt dumber than the zombies which broke the immersion at times. Sniping at distance was a favourite and 'pasted over' the issue to some extent.

The open world felt empty in both good and bad ways. The only real reason to explore a lot of locations was loot and as I said that began to feel monotonous at some stage. Not sure how this could be solved.

Anyway, I'm sure I'm not saying anything particularly novel here, just wanted to shoot the **** with some fellow enthusiasts as part of the experience.

Oh.. not being able to collect the minigun.. that sucks. 😆
