Oil pan question

Oil pan question

My 2004 Tacoma has an oil leak, and as I was looking at the oil pan (pictured here), I noticed the odd rough patch. It looks like it's rusted, or was welded or something. Any idea what the rough surface the arrows are pointing at are?

Ball Joint Question

I acquired a 2004 Tacoma (ext cab, I4 2wd/4wd, with 120k). My local Toyota dealer told me the ball joints were replaced via the recall back in Nov 2009 (mileage unknown). About how many years/miles would the new ball joints be expected to last? The truck is in mostly excellent shape with very little rust. Thanks

Seat repair or covers?

Just bought an ‘04 Extended Cab. Any recommendations on fixing it?

I just acquired a 2004 Tacoma 4WD/2WD Extracab with the 2.7l I4, and need to get it inspected (New Jersey, USA).

I ran a code check and got a P0441 error code.

My question to AI was "List the probable causes of a p0441 code on 2004 tacoma 2.7l i4".

----------------------------------------------

Here's the AI response...

A P0441 (EVAP system incorrect purge flow) on a 2004 Toyota Tacoma 2.7L (2TR-FE) means the ECU isn’t seeing the expected amount of fuel vapor being pulled from the charcoal canister into the engine. On these trucks, the EVAP system is pretty simple, so the usual suspects are fairly predictable.

Here are the most probable causes, roughly in order of frequency:

  1. Faulty purge valve (VSV for EVAP)
  • The purge solenoid/valve (Toyota calls it a Vacuum Switching Valve) can:
    • Stick open → too much flow
    • Stick closed → no flow
  • Very common on older Toyotas.
  • Located near the intake manifold.
  1. Cracked, disconnected, or clogged vacuum hoses
  • Brittle hoses (common at this age) can:
    • Leak → incorrect flow readings
    • Collapse or clog → restricted flow
  • Check all lines between:
    • Intake manifold
    • Purge valve
    • Charcoal canister
  1. Bad charcoal canister
  • The canister can:
    • Become saturated with fuel
    • Break internally and clog lines with charcoal pellets
  • Often happens if the truck was repeatedly overfilled at the pump.
  1. Faulty canister vent valve (vent VSV)
  • Controls fresh air entering the EVAP system.
  • If stuck:
    • Closed → no airflow → triggers P0441
    • Open → incorrect flow behavior
  1. Loose or faulty gas cap
  • Less common for P0441 specifically (more common for P0440/P0455), but still possible.
  • Check:
    • Seal condition
    • Proper tightening (“clicks”)
  1. EVAP line blockage
  • Dirt, debris, or charcoal fragments can restrict flow.
  • Especially likely if the canister is failing.
  1. Electrical issues (less common)
  • Wiring problems to purge or vent valves:
    • Broken wires
    • Corrosion in connectors
  • Would often show additional codes, but not always.

How I’d prioritize diagnosis (quick strategy)

  1. Check gas cap (easy/free)
  2. Inspect vacuum lines (look + feel for cracks)
  3. Test purge valve
    • Should hold vacuum when off
    • Should open when powered
  4. Inspect canister & vent valve
    • Look for charcoal debris in lines
  5. Only then chase wiring issues

Tacoma-specific note

On early-2000s Toyotas like your Tacoma:

  • The purge valve and canister assembly failures are VERY common
  • If you find charcoal bits in hoses → the canister is done

2004 Extended Cab 2.7L I4. Needs a little work, but overall it's in good shape. My biggest concern is the clutch (5 spd). I have to push it about halfway before it starts disengaging - although there's no noticeable slippage. Also, there are four metal brackets on the top corners of the bed - anybody know what they were for?
