Hey everyone,

I recently bought a 2010 Peugeot with the 1.6 VTi petrol engine, and I’m trying to figure out what’s going on before I throw money at it.

Symptoms:

  • Rough idle, especially when cold (engine shakes)
  • If I press the gas, it stutters, then revs up normally
  • Around 2000 RPM it smooths out completely
  • Once the engine warms up, it runs much better
  • Occasional misfire-like behavior at low RPM
  • “Anti pollution system failure” message on the dash
  • The RPM is fluctuating at idle, it drops below 1000 RPM to around 800, then goes back up, and keeps going up and down repeatedly.
  • The engine noticeably shakes at idle, and the exhaust is also visibly vibrating.
  • After I turn the engine off, the cooling fan sometimes keeps running

Error codes:

  • P0014 (Camshaft position timing over-advanced, Bank 1)
  • P1336 / P1337 / P1339 (generic scanner, not sure exact meaning)

Additional info:

  • No major knocking, but I’m not 100% sure about timing chain noise on cold start
  • Previous owner claimed it’s “electrical, not mechanical”
  • Car drives fine once RPM is higher
  • Feels like the issue is mostly at idle / low RPM

Would really appreciate advice from anyone who has dealt with this engine 🙏

Hey everyone,

I’ve got a 2014 1.0 Ecoboost Ford Focus. Bought it at 130k km, now it’s at 206k. For about 2.5 years it was honestly flawless, didn’t have to touch it.

Then one day while driving a hose cracked, coolant leaked out, engine overheated and I had to pull over immediately. Took it to a dealership, they replaced the hose and everything seemed fine again.

While I was waiting there, I talked a bit with the mechanics. They were actually praising the 1.0 Ecoboost, saying it has a cast iron block and that it’s a really solid engine (won engine of the year multiple times etc.). That kind of stuck with me.

Fast forward about 6 months ago, I started noticing white smoke from the exhaust when idling at traffic lights. At the same time, coolant slowly started disappearing, but there were no visible leaks anywhere.

Took it back to the dealership. They said it’s probably the head, but not to worry, “easy fix”. They pulled the head, did a pressure test, said it wasn’t cracked, just warped. They skimmed it and suggested doing the timing components while they’re in there. In the end I paid around €1,300.

Car was fine for about a month.

Then out of nowhere: check engine light comes on and… coolant is disappearing again.

Took it back again two days ago. Now they’re saying they don’t know what’s going on, even though the head was tested and machined.

So now I’m just waiting, no updates, and honestly I’m getting pretty frustrated.

Has anyone dealt with something similar on these engines?
What else could cause coolant loss + white smoke after a “fixed” head?

Any ideas or experiences would help a lot.
