decline of the companions?
the companions started as a small army of 500 nords strong or so the books say if they are even reliable due to the fact nords have an oral tradition predating written history, however they also during the second era were much more then sellswords for hire as they had established other strongholds like fellowstone hall and the crypt under Shor's stone, it was also at this time that the companions accepted all including mages into their organisation and even had the distinguished position for mages simply known as sages, and did not care for one's race, or if they use magic or not, the dicline was drastic by the 4th era Fallowstone is but a cave no one ever visits as the buildings there have long since rotted away, an obvious cave-in happened at shor's stone sealing off the cript and the compainions were reduced to sellswords by the 4th era acting like the fighters guild which incidentally during the 2nd era had a hall in every city in skyrim. what was the cause of the companion's decline?
