Best structure I’ve stumbled into for short-form. Open with the most impressive 1-2 seconds of the app doing its thing. Cut to 3-4 seconds of B-roll of you actually using it with your hands and a real phone. Then back to the money shot. People scroll fast and you’ve got maybe a second to stop them, so lead with the result, earn the trust with the B-roll, then deliver the result again. One we posted hit around 700k doing exactly this. App is Flyby, I’m down to talk more about the strategy.

Started out using ARKit for the sky overlay since that’s the obvious choice, but it kept fighting me. ARKit is built around tracking the world, not the sky, so it was constantly trying to anchor to features that weren’t there and drifting whenever the camera saw mostly dark. Ended up ripping it out and going straight to the magnetometer plus device attitude from CoreMotion. That’s where most of the accuracy and stability gains came from. The other half of the problem was orbital propagation being tight enough that the marker doesn’t drift off a LEO satellite that’s crossing the sky in 5 to 10 minutes. Photo is of me tracking the last Atlas V launch.
It’s a satellite and launch tracker called Flyby. Only notifies you when something’s actually visible from where you are (factoring sun angle, light pollution, magnitude) instead of pinging you every time something’s overhead. AR shows you where to look once you’re outside. Video is a pass I caught last week. On Product Hunt today if yall wanna check it out.
