Maybe it was trusting the weather, choosing the wrong feed, buying the wrong equipment, or something a seasoned farmer warned you about years ago.

If you could go back and give your younger self one piece of farming advice, what would it be?

Early mornings are where the real work happens. Today’s routine started with one of our first-calf Jersey heifers getting milked.

She freshened about two weeks ago and has been settling in well. She’s a super gentle cow, tested negative for A2/A2, BLV, BVD, and Johne’s, and is currently giving around 4–5 gallons per day with twice-a-day milking.

She may not have the picture-perfect udder that some people look for, but she’s got a great attitude, good structure, and the kind of temperament that makes working with her enjoyable every day.
Just sharing a little glimpse into the daily life of running a farm — the early mornings, the animals, and the work behind the scenes.

For the cattle folks here: what traits do you value most in a family milk cow — production, temperament, longevity, or udder quality?

This is the kind of cow that makes producers think twice about age alone.

Would you cull a cow like this simply because she’s getting older, or would you keep her around because she continues to breed back, stay productive, and raise quality calves every year?
Some cows truly earn their place in the herd. This old girl has proven herself and is still doing what matters most — producing.

What’s your approach? Do you go by age, or by performance?

Venison backstrap on a Green Mountain pellet smoker. Smoked whole and then cut into slices. About 200 degrees for a bit over 2 hours. So tender and juicy.
