Lessons from wasting $15,000 on 100 blog posts (And how we fixed our topical authority strategy)

Last year, we spent $15,000 on writers to draft 100 blog posts for a B2B SaaS client. It turned out to be a complete disaster because we tried to rank for everything under the broad umbrella of "B2B SaaS Marketing" all at once. Search engines just ignored us.

After that failure, we changed our approach completely. Now we focus heavily on building deep topical authority before writing a single line. Here is the framework that is actually working for us now:

  • Narrowing the lane: Instead of general topics, we target hyper-specific niches (e.g., organic email list growth for Shopify brands instead of just "e-commerce").
  • The 10-Pillar Map: We map out 10 broad subtopics but never build them all at once. We pick just one to focus on first.
  • 30 Strict Clusters: For that single pillar, we create 30 non-overlapping cluster pages. No semantic duplication, no writing 5 versions of the same keyword.
  • The Lockdown Rule: We don't touch the other 9 pillars until these 30 pages are written, published, and internally linked to the main hub.

It feels slow, but building a deep cluster signals real expertise to search engines way faster than scattering 100 thin posts across a massive niche.
