Any PhD students here? Need some advice on biomedical PhD applications

Hi everyone, I’m preparing for a biomedical PhD application and wanted to ask current PhD students and prospective applicants for some honest advice.

Is it usually better to contact a PI before submitting the application, or is it fine to apply first and reach out later? Also, are there any practical tips or “hacks” that actually help in biomedical PhD admissions?

Would really appreciate any insights from people who have gone through the process.

Any positive HKU PhD updates?

Hi everyone, I applied for an HKU PhD program in December, and my portal still shows pending. Has anyone here received a positive response recently from HKU PhD admissions?

Just trying to understand whether this is still normal or if I should assume it’s unlikely at this stage. Any recent experiences would be really helpful.

Anyone daily-driving a QWERTY phone in 2026?

I’m trying to cut down my phone addiction and switch to a keyboard phone for daily use. I still need calls, WhatsApp, and email, but I want something much less distracting than a smartphone.

If anyone is currently using a BlackBerry Classic, Nokia feature phone, Clicks Communicator, Unihertz Titan 2, or any similar device as a daily driver, please share your real experience. How is battery life, typing, WhatsApp, and overall practicality?

Also open to better alternatives for reducing screen time.

I've been reading about the Biomedical Data Science PhD at Stanford and find the intersection of genomics and ML really compelling — especially labs working on cancer genomics and multi-omics.

Curious to hear from current students or alumni:

What kind of research problems are people actually working on day-to-day?

Is there a strong community for people coming from wet-lab/life science backgrounds who transitioned into computational work?

How do students typically find their rotation labs or advisors?

Not looking for admissions advice — just trying to understand whether the program culture and research style would be a good fit before going deeper into it.
