Hello to the Developers! The Remake seems really promising, but I was wondering if you can address some stuff. During the reveal, it was mentioned that the team revisited the original game to understand what to preserve and what to evolve. With that in mind, I’d like to better understand the reasoning behind some changes:

1. UI, the shift from a minimap to a compass: while the compass feels more modern and immersive, it seems to reduce spatial awareness in certain situations, particularly during naval stealth, where the original minimap helped track enemy ship vision more clearly. Was this trade-off intentional? And is there any possibility of offering players the choice between compass and minimap in the settings?
2. Regarding base movement and controls: I assume the system is inherited from recent titles like AC Shadows, which means the separation between walk/run inputs of the Original Black Flag is replaced on controller by a more unified control scheme (just left stick for walk and run) and the high/low profile system appears to be removed too and replaced with a crouch mechanic; while this works well for traditional stealth, it seems less suited for social stealth, which previously relied on more separate movement states. Has the team considered allowing alternative control schemes, perhaps as an optional setting, to replicate the classic system from the AC1-Syndicate era? Some players are still very accustomed to having walking tied to the stick and running (not sprinting) mapped to the right trigger, both for traversal and parkour. Since this was a core part of the original experience, I’m curious whether it was ever considered to retain it, and what led to the decision to move away from it. Thanks in advance for any insight you can share.

Answer:

To answer question 1: Our focus with Resynced was to keep our eyes on the seas. The compass helps give a direction on where to go, without taking up a lot of screen space or distracting from the sea.

Question 2: We're definitely keeping our eyes on this topic, and we hear you on the request for a more classic control scheme.

What do each of you consider to have been the biggest challenge in modernising Black Flag while still remaining faithful to the original? What was the hardest part to nail down about a game mechanic or new narrative tissue? Any fun stories about that process you can maybe share?

So, to answer your question on fun stories... There's a hidden stack of coconuts in Havana, ready to be bowled...

Hi I have a historical question. I'm a pirate historian who specializes in Anne Bonny and Mary Read.

Are there going to be any changes to the database entries to reflect new research found since the original games release in 2013? Like the burial record of Ann Bonny dated December 29th 1733 in Jamaica? I'm the person who originally found that document and to see even a one sentence reference to my work in one of my favorite games would be, genuinely, one of the greatest moments of my life.

Also as a side note is there going to be any new content featuring Bonny or Read? I know the capture of the sloop William on October 22nd 1720 was originally going to be a mission in the original release but was cut for time.

The Legendary Ships return and are as brutal as ever to fight. We'll be sharing more information on Legendary Ships in a naval deep dive later in May.

In terms of the engine. How much did Shadows' tech helped and will we see anything from that game expanded on a technical level?

Answer:   The Anvil engine at the heart of Shadows is at the heart of Black Flag Resynced too, giving us access to everything from Raytracing and RTGI to better sound, dynamic weather, destructible objects and more. And specifically for Black Flag Resynced, the Anvil watertech team has been a critical part of the experience in giving us the best naval experience yet.

Hello! Combat has seen the most significant changes from the original game. I have several questions about that.

1. What was the overarching design philosophy for combat?
2. Are there any inspirations you took when designing the new fight system, both on-player and on-enemy? Did you take a look at other games (Sifu, Arkham) or even other genres (fighting games, etc)?
3. The original Black Flag had a singular difficulty setting. For players who enjoy combat, would you consider adding a high-difficulty mode that strongly affects enemy activeness/aggression? This combat framework seems to feature a lot of crowd-control opportunities and it would be ideal if there was an elective level-of-challenge that puts that into strong focus for the player. I noticed that Kick and Sweep seem to just be buttons you can press any time whenever you want, for example, with no cooldown or cost (other than, you didn't press a different button that may be better) which is very "action game moves list" so to speak. Kind of non-standard for a modern Assassin's Creed game that's proud of its combat, I dig it.

Answer:

Resynced's combat is heavily inspired by fan made combo/tool videos from the original. We set off with a target to bring back Edward's parry-based, flashy style of combat, but we also knew that the bar for fight systems is higher in 2026. In the original, using the pistol and tools in combat were great fun, but they were mostly visual.

In Resynced, different moves need to be used in different situations - this means that one needs to react quickly in order to pull off a flashy series of moves.

• will the DNA Sequences menu for the main and side missions make a comeback?
• Bounty Hunters: will the "notoriety" system work like in the original Black Flag, or will it use some of the changes introduced in Rogue (Hunters chasing you on land, or boarding your ship)?
• will the Remake include some new side activities?
• the original Black Flag had "community challenges", such as Royal Convoys or Social Chests: will these activities return in some form in the remake?

The DNA sequences menu will not be making a comeback.

We use the classic Wanted System from Black Flag, where Pirate Hunters will sail in and stalk you based on your wanted level. Higher wanted level = stronger and more pirate hunters on the look-out. You can reduce your bounty by boarding ships or by paying bribes to corrupt officers.

All side activities from the original return and were rebuilt from the ground up. Royal Convoys are in the game, but finding them won't be easy! As for social chests, a pirate never confirms or denies the existence of his treasure.

Will Resynced include plenty of options, like in AC: Shadows, to disable HUD and UI elements? In addition, will it have options to disable visual effects (VFX) such as enemy attack glints (blue, red, etc.), the white stealth outline/overlay, the "last known position" hologram, etc.? Some of us actually want to turn these things off to have a more immersive, more grounded, and less cluttered gameplay experience.

Answer:

We saw some of the feedback on the Parry VFX being too "loud" visually, and we're actively exploring this as we speak 😄 You'll definitely be able to customize UI and HUD options including turning off the VFX, although we recommend keeping it on as you you get used to the timing of enemy attacks.

Kenway's Fleet is now built into Black Flag Resynced, and can be accessed through either the Hideout or your Captain's Cabin - no phone needed!

The map size remains the same, at 16 x 16km. However, the world is now a little more dense, with new islands and new locations nestled in the cities!

Controls are definitely remappable, and we have separate remaps for ground and naval controls, in case you have specific needs that apply to one but not the other. We'll soon share more details on our accessibility features, so stay tuned for that!

We've added Pathfinder for naval for Black Flag Resynced, and the ship now supports autopilot. Edwards hands must stay at the wheel though - you never know when an attack is coming...

The PC system requirements graphic mentioned offhandedly that the game will support "Precomputed lighting". What does this mean? Is this just RTX off? Baked lighting like Unity?

Answer:

All modes support raytracing - including a software raytracing mode for older graphics cards - however if framerate isn't high enough for you, you can revert to precomputed lighting to increase performance.

Hello guys, quick shot: in the official showcase you confirmed that hidden blade combat will be an option. My question is: will the blades be selectable weapons like in the OG one, or will they only work in combos like Naoe and her Tanto from AC Shadows?

Answer:   Dual swords are the main weapons Edward will use in battle. The Hidden Blade is not a selectable weapon, but a fatal, contextual (and BLOODY!) takedown that is available when you break the defense of your opponent!

This makes the Hidden Blade Takedown a critical part of moment-to-moment combat, which was not the case in the original.

Will the parkour be as smooth and satisfying as AC Unity? Is there a multiplayer mode?

Answer: 

There is no multiplayer mode. Resynced is a pure story-driven experience, fully focused on Edward’s personal journey. We wanted to bring back this fan-favorite character in the best way possible, by rebuilding the ground and naval gameplay, and expanding the story while staying true to the original vision of the main game.
