Llywelyn and His Brave Hound, Gelert by Gourlay Steell (1880)

Llywelyn and his brave hound, Gelert, form the heart of a famous 13th-century Welsh legend. The story tells of Prince Llywelyn returning from a hunt to find an overturned cradle, blood, and his loyal hound with a blood-stained mouth. Believing the dog killed his son, Llywelyn struck the hound, only to discover his baby safe and a dead wolf nearby that Gelert had fought to protect the child.
