Should I learn it?

Apple just released an update across the entire suite. How do you think it compares to DaVinci Resolve today?

I want to learn editing and graphic design (anything except Adobe). I'm torn between these two options:

DaVinci Resolve (free) + Affinity Studio + Cavalry Studio <- This is the option I prefer.

Apple Creator Studio (I already own it)

But my problem is: 8GB of RAM, MacBook Air M1, macOS 26. And the fact that I don't have a big budget for plugins or a paid full version of either software. I pay $3/month for the Apple suite because I'm a student.

I know my only option here is Apple Creator Studio, but I also have another MacBook Air M4 16GB, but it's not mine; it belongs to the company I work for. So if I quit, I'll have to leave it behind and use the 8GB one. My question is:

Should I learn to use the DaVinci Resolve suite... or Apple's?

Because if I learn DaVinci Resolve and they take away my computer, I'll be short on RAM, but it will be more useful in the future.

Or should I use both?

Right now I clearly know I don't have much room to maneuver, but in the future I want to aim for high-ticket projects and my current goal is to earn more than $700 for now (I'm from Latin America). I want to make good animations, motion graphics, etc.

How do I learn backend + Rust?

Rust is my first language, and I want to learn CLI, TUI, and backend development, although right now backend is my priority.

I've already become quite familiar with Rust's syntax, at least I think so. According to the Rustlings exercises, I've completed all of them up to lifetimes, which is the topic I'm currently working on.

And by consulting AI, I've learned a bit more (itarators, closures, and tests), but I'm stuck: creating projects. I suppose I understand the syntax, but I don't know how to start a project (even one that's not backend-related). So, I'm wondering, how do you learn backend logic + Rust? Or do you just research backend concepts separately and try to integrate them into Rust?

I found the book "Zero to Production Rust." I don't know if it's up-to-date, but I understand it uses Actix. I'd like to learn Axum, though, and I'd still look into it. What do you think?

How do you guys do it?

In these times of AI, what would you learn and why?

I've been having doubts about what to study. Personally, I enjoy and have some (minimal) knowledge of video editing, graphic design, and programming (Rust/Python).

Although I haven't been able to do anything in these fields so far, I feel a bit lost about what to focus on, especially since I need a remote job. There are few opportunities in these areas in my country (they exist, but I'd prefer to find something remote).

Considering the current job market, AI, remote work, and everything else, what would you study and why?

(This isn't a question about the degrees I mentioned before; it's open to any degree that allows for remote work.)

(I'm from Nicaragua)

How my parents ruined my life

It's a very long story, so I'll try to summarize it.

Everything was fine in my childhood (I suppose), except that my parents didn't teach me anything, so I grew up without learning how to do anything. The only thing that caught my attention was technology in general.

When I was about 11, my mother cheated on my father and had an affair with her teacher, and my brother and I bought into it (because we were unaware of the seriousness of the situation) by saying that he was better for our lives and things like that. At first, it was okay, but as the months went by, there was abuse, beatings, mistreatment, and everything else directed at my mother. I hated him during that time and never spoke to him again, even though we were living in the same house.

My mother started to "stand up for herself." Before, she had been more submissive, calm, and so on. But then she started being grotesque, gossipy, abusive, even with us... She humiliated us, belittled us, though mostly with me. With my younger brother it was mild (at first), but with me, from a very young age, she humiliated me for everything and yelled at me, whether in public, with family members, etc.

Especially because of the work issue and the fact that I was never taught how to do anything. From a young age, she wanted to force me to work in a family business (a family business where everyone was a thief, drug addict, con artist, you name it...). I practically had no choice, being underage and receiving constant threats from her (and from him too). She would publicly share my secrets and confessions, even those I'd made to her, even to people who spoke ill of me. She always compared me to everyone... (in the end, everyone she compared me to ended up in drug rehab or in prison). I got my first girlfriend. My mom said her family had a reputation for being promiscuous, and in some ways she was right, but not entirely (I've been with her for six years now and nothing like that has ever happened). But she decided my girlfriend was just as bad as them, or worse, because of the family's reputation, and just like she slandered me, she did the same to her. I wasn't spoiled or bad. Not a student, not a slacker... nothing... I was even the best in the whole high school. It all just went to her head. Before, with my dad, she was a housewife and was studying. With my stepfather, she started out as a lawyer. He gave her contacts, money, a business, a house, everything... and the abuse. It was a sudden and drastic change. We started planting hidden microphones to record her conversations with everyone. My God, no one is spared. She speaks ill of her children, her parents, her ex-husband (my dad), her current husband, her daughters-in-law, everyone. With my brother, she was always affectionate, doting, etc. But shortly before my brother got a partner, she started acting like that too.

It got to the point where, when I confronted him about sending me to work while I was recovering from dental work, he literally threw his cell phone at my face with all his might. I dodged it; I just saw the pieces of the phone flying. Another time, he lifted me by the neck and threw me to the floor, and it just kept going...

To the point where what my stepfather did seemed like nothing, and he got fed up with my mom, left the house, and offered me a place to live with him. I accepted. Everything was fine at first; I felt a lot of peace. He promised to help me with university, but after a few months, he contacted her again, and he started to change towards me. He fed me only once and a half a day (and it wasn't much), he acted indifferent, etc.

I got to the point where I was very weak, studying all day, and he took me to work on Sundays (the only day off I had). So I decided to go back to my mom. It's like, why put up with someone who isn't family? I knew I'd be in almost the same situation wherever I am, so I prefer to be with family than with someone who isn't related to me.

The same day I spoke with my mom, we were apparently going to my grandparents' house. She didn't tell me and took me there in my dirty work clothes. I spoke with my mom there, and she asked me to tell her everything that happened when I was with him. She confronted him about my food (I think she misunderstood me because I told her he wasn't feeding me anything at all). He grabbed me from behind and dragged me in front of my aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc. (the whole family), and insulted me and everything... They fought against him there... and I went back to my mom's.

I continued at UNI for a few months, I got a full scholarship (I already had it and had lost it because they forced me to work on the days I was supposed to go to UNI) and they didn't have to worry about paying anything, I just had to study... but no... she forced me to drop out and look for weekend classes (here, my major doesn't exist on weekends, systems engineering)

I went back to work for them, but this time full-time (yes, even though we were separated and fighting, the business belonged to both of them, so whether they were fighting or not, they would always have to interact somehow). You could say it was the worst time of my life. Problems almost every day, humiliations, insults, and not just from them, but also from the employees, because they encouraged it and didn't defend me. The schedule was from 5-6 am to 6-8 pm, sometimes 9, for only... $191... they earn thousands... I snapped. I looked for someone to work there, no matter what, and I went to an office company, doing Excel and all that. It was tough at first, but once I got the hang of it, I felt the peace of not having problems or humiliations, but I was still earning very little, $250. And since I didn't continue working for them, they started charging me practically rent to keep living at home, $55. I ended up earning practically the same as before. After a while (during the AI era), I did programming projects because that's what was available. My degree was in progress, but I didn't really know what I was doing because I hadn't studied enough and I completely neglected it during all the years I worked in that family business.

Even so, I managed to get a higher position, $500 USD a month. I lasted about a month or two earning that salary before I started to value privacy and the security of my belongings more. Someone went into my room and used my things (she allowed it), so to avoid saying anything and to prevent it, I locked my room. The first day I did this, she tried to get in. When I got home, she was waiting for me, furious, humiliating and demeaning me, saying I had no business being in that house, that she could come and go as she pleased in any room, that I had no power there and no privacy whatsoever.

My girlfriend had already moved into an apartment on her own, which I was helping her with, just the day before. So I got fed up with everything and went with her. We were away for six months, and it was wonderful... so peaceful... no yelling, no humiliation, with a relatively good paying job and everything else...

During that time, I reconnected with my dad (she had forbidden us from seeing him; I didn't see him for 10 years) and told him about the situation. He showed me a divorce decree, where the house she lives in is in our name through an irrevocable donation. We spoke with a lawyer about the case, and we could clearly win, but it's incredibly expensive—30% of the house's value. For us, it's like trying to get it back only to sell it and end up without it.

We didn't proceed; we left it at that for a while. Then my mom texted me... I told her everything I thought about her. I went... My God, so harsh, like I had no heart at all...

She complained to her husband (the same one she dragged me into). He was complaining about me, and he spoke to me, threatening me about what I told her, about my girlfriend's family, about the house (the lawyer we spoke to told him everything) because he had contributed to it, and he almost threatened to kill me too (I know and remember that he has ordered other people to be beaten, to the point of leaving them without a jaw or teeth). Shortly after, my brother and I got sick, he with a bacterial infection and I almost had a stroke (I'm still recovering). I was paralyzed. She came to see us (my brother's mother-in-law was the one who told her we were in the hospital, because my brother went to his girlfriend's place around the same time as me) and apologized to us. We forgave her, but we didn't trust her. Even so, because of the situation and my illness, she offered me a place to live at her other house (yes, she's fighting over our house, and she has HER own houses). We accepted, just to try to keep the peace and out of necessity... and yes, we left microphones again. We were hiding, and she kept talking badly about us, our partners, and anyone else who crossed her path.

By the way, she claims to be a Christian and uses God to convince others that she's never the bad guy. In one of those audio messages, she said, "You'll see, God is going to get those two out of my way, out of my children's lives" (our partners). That was a few days ago, and now I'm afraid she'll do something, and she knows very well where we are. My dad is suggesting we sue her for the house. She told my brother she was going to give us the house in a few months, but I don't trust her. She always fought for that house as if she were the sole and only owner.

And about my job, I'm scared. I don't think I need to explain the whole artificial intelligence thing, but it's really expensive, and I need to learn how to program properly or do something else with my life. I practically don't know how to do anything: administration, Excel, and little else. My English is so-so, nothing... I feel lost in my life. I'm afraid she'll get into another fit and kick us out of the house. I have no savings (since even though I earn 500, my partner is studying, not working, and everything is so expensive). What do I do? This is my story. As I said, I tried to summarize it. It could be enough to write a book about the real story. Maybe some things are a little loose, but... she's evil personified. No one escapes her. To give you an idea of what I left out, in a fit of anger with my family, she grabbed an aunt by the neck and slammed her against the wall, and she doesn't even speak to my grandparents because apparently they stole some land from them.

What should I learn if I want a job quickly?

Hi everyone, nice to meet you! 😁 I'm from Nicaragua, and my question is pretty short: what should I learn to get a job as quickly as possible?

I'm currently working as a Vibe coder (practically, not literally). I've developed Android apps, tools for the company, and things like that, but I want to do some serious programming.

My knowledge is limited to the basics. I don't really understand OOP or databases yet, and I barely understand Git, and so on. (What I do know, I know in Rust; it's my favorite language.)

I'm thinking about learning Python because where I work they need to automate data from Excel and CSV files—taking and processing them, and maybe, if possible, on a server with PostgreSQL or something similar, but that's not the priority.

That's where I am right now, but it's to keep me there for a while.

But my real goal is to get a job as soon as possible, even if it's in a different field. What do you recommend? What stack? What field? Why? Etc.

And if possible, I'd really like to find someone to learn from; I learn more when I have someone to learn from 😁

I'd be happy to earn around $500 a month (I obviously aspire to more), but let's say that with $500 I'd be living "comfortably" with some limitations, but at least enough to gain experience.

I need help figuring out what to learn.

I'm learning Rust, and I need to learn UI design for a tool I want to create.

I was thinking of creating a prototype in Ratatouille, but I don't know how to make UIs yet. The TUI is just for testing some functionalities, not the final version. The final version has graphics, tables, and nodes (not necessary, but it would be nice).

My options right now are:

Ratatui (prototype).

Iced, egui, Tauri, Flutter.

I don't know how to make any UIs, so I'm hesitant to learn Tauri because I'd have to learn everything: HTML, CSS, etc. And in the case of Flutter, I'd have to learn Dart.

I develop on a Mac, and I need to compile for Windows.

I'm also tempted by the idea of learning Flutter for mobile development.

At the moment I'm leaning towards Tauri + Svelte + Typescript + Shadcn components, since I really like the design. What do you recommend and why? Should I learn RataTUI or start directly with the final UI?

(Although I want to avoid the use of web technologies and learn something for a future saas)

If you were in this situation, what would you choose?

If you had a limited computer (8GB RAM), no budget (no savings), and knowing the current state of the market, which path would you choose and why?

Programming

Video editing

Animation

3D modeling

Graphic design

Engineering

Something else.

What should I study?

I feel lost.

I live in Nicaragua, and as many of you know, salaries here are quite low, and I'm scared. This is my situation:

Due to many reasons (I can't say them all), it's been very difficult for me to study, but here's what I've studied:

Video Editing

I really enjoy it. I like the visual appeal of editing, cuts, effects, and so on, but I have a problem: hardware. I have a MacBook Air M1 with 8GB of RAM, and almost no professional editing software works with that amount of RAM. Maybe Final Cut Pro is the only one, but I don't know if I can do professional editing, since it's much more limited than the others unless I buy plugins and all that, which I don't have. And even if I did, I have the problem that I'm not very creative; I'm more logical than creative.

Programming

This is possibly what I like the most, but with some caveats: I like a specific language: Rust. The drawback? There are no jobs for beginners. There's Python, beginner-friendly, and more job openings. Now, I don't really know much about programming; I know the basics (conditionals, loops, functions, variables, and little else). I don't know about databases, architectures, or anything like that. I want to learn, but now there's the fear:

AI and the remote job market. I see posts from many people looking for jobs, but even with many years of experience, they can't find work. I just wonder, what awaits me?

I also like other areas (though less than these two) like 3D modeling, animation, and a few others. Although, if my hardware limits my editing, I don't know what would happen with 3D XD.

Besides, my English level is intermediate (I'm translating this). I know I absolutely must learn this, but with everything else, I feel lost. I don't know what to study or what to do.

I'm thinking of studying a bit more Python just for my job (data management in Excel), but beyond that I don't know, I'm not sure...

I need help with a project.

Clarification: This is not a SaaS; it is for internal company use.

Hi everyone! I'm a beginner and I want to master Rust. The company I work for needs an app to streamline/automate processes, so I'd like to submit a proposal and practice my Rust skills (learning by doing). Here are the details:

Extract data from CSV, .xls, and .xlsx files, save it to a database, and send/export the data to Excel, CSV, and via a Telegram bot (raw data -> processed data).

Other requirements:

A collaborative tool (desktop app). Everyone can use the app offline, make changes, and those changes are merged when connecting to a LAN.

Challenges:

The company isn't focused on software development; there's no server or anything like that, and they can't afford it because they don't have any developers. This is just a proposal I wanted to share.

The only "available" computer will be my MacBook Air M4 with 16GB of RAM, but I clearly use it for my daily work, specifically for development, so its resources are limited.

This tool will be for my colleagues; they aren't technical, so it needs to be as simple and easy as possible for them.

The data importers will be 2-8 users, and the data viewers will be between 10 and 30 users (via Telegram). The amount of data is, let's say, 1 million annually (slightly less) over 5 years, totaling 5 million data points that need to be stored and managed by the 2-8 users handling the information.

I know what to use for the obvious tasks: Calamine for reading Excel files, Teloxide for the Telegram bot, etc.

What I'm not clear on and need help with is which database to use? Fusion system, server? Peer-to-peer? CDRT 'parrot'? Basically, I'm lost when it comes to connecting and merging data and how to save it.

My doubts and fears about studying CS

I feel like I'm in a complicated situation in my professional career.

Hi everyone, I'm from Nicaragua. For those who don't know, salaries here are quite low in all jobs, and my case is no different. I earn $550, but with my expenses, there's little left to save. My total savings don't even cover one month's salary (or at least not now).

I studied systems engineering for two years. I learned Java and C# (just the basics of desktop applications, no backend, nothing professional, no Git, no databases, almost nothing). The degree program here is a bit different than in other countries, so it wasn't a big deal. Even so, I really enjoyed programming; I fell in love with it, so to speak.

That was four years ago. I had to drop out of my degree due to financial problems, and I had to give up everything related to computer science because of my job. I forgot most of what I learned; I only remembered functions, conditionals, loops, variables, etc. (the very basics).

Last year I got back into programming because I changed jobs and had the time. I started studying and brushing up on the basics in Rust. I loved the language and its whole philosophy.

Then came the AI boom. I started working on projects when they were just chatbots, and my boss liked them. They changed my role to "vibe-coder" because I don't know anything advanced. I could do basic things, but not the advanced stuff required for those projects. So, I guess I am a vibe-coder (I'm the only programmer/vibe-coder in the whole company, since it's not a software company; I just create tools for my colleagues).

Other areas I enjoyed were video editing and a bit of animation. However, I felt a little lost because I feel like I've never been very creative, even though I like it.

Back to the present, the cost of AI has skyrocketed. It's too expensive, and with my salary, it's impossible for me to keep paying for it.

Now I'm wondering, what should I learn?

I feel like video editing would be easier, but... hardware: MacBook Air M1 with 8GB of RAM. (although I could use Final Cut Pro, since it's quite optimized)

And even if I learn, they pay even less here for video editing (I have a colleague at the company who gets paid up to 30% less than me).

And programming, I feel like I'd like to learn Rust because it aligns perfectly with everything I like: fast and secure (among other things). But I understand there are practically no jobs for junior developers.

My other option is Python (it's almost everything I don't like), but it's good because it makes finding a job easier. However... at the company where I work, they want something easy to use, a single binary (.exe) to run directly. They're not technical. And something secure to prevent data leaks (one of my projects is a Telegram bot).

Now, let's say Python can meet those requirements, but I also have another concern, which is more of a fear.

What's the job market like? Are there more opportunities for junior developers? Is the market saturated? Is it because of AI that they're no longer looking for juniors? I'm really scared.

I don't know enough English yet to study remotely; I'm approximately B1-B2, at least in reading and listening, but I'm very bad at speaking.
