What platforms do people in different language communities usually use to discuss things, and what kinds of topics do they talk about
My first language is Chinese, and these are some of the forums / Chinese-speaking online communities I’ve seen:
🇹🇼Dcard
This originally started as a platform for Taiwanese college students, so most users are younger people in their 20s–30s. A lot of the popular posts are about relationships, or things like how I save first million NTD.
🇹🇼PTT
The average age here feels older, maybe around 30–40. You can find more long-form and serious posts, and people who genuinely put effort into answering questions. Popular boards include casual chat, stocks, and anime. But some people there can be extremely harsh and toxic.
🇺🇲Threads Chinese-speaking community
The average emotional maturity here feels quite low to me. Many users come across as self-centered and extreme. Topics I frequently see include education/exam pressure, anti-China sentiment, and feminism-related discussions.
🇨🇳Zhihu
This site doesn’t really have specific category boards that gather the same hobby communities together. It focuses more on answering questions. The topics are pretty diverse. I’ve seen discussions about life experiences, international politics, Chinese history, and all kinds of personal suffering. It doesn’t feel concentrated around particular style or theme.
🇨🇳Bilibili
It’s basically the Chinese version of YouTube (although a lot of videos there are reuploads of YouTube videos with Chinese subtitles added). Some Chinese content creators upload only on Bilibili and not on YouTube, so you can find a much richer variety of content from the Chinese-speaking world there.
🇯🇵Line
In Taiwan, this is used a lot in company and family group chats. There are many original stickers you can buy, but a lot of older images and videos expire and can’t be viewed anymore. I think that’s pretty bad.
