I came across this post by UNESCO on X earlier today:
“Women now outnumber men in higher education globally.
Yet important gaps remain. Women continue to be underrepresented at doctoral level and hold only around one quarter of senior leadership positions in academia.
Progress is real, but achieving equality in leadership, research and decision-making remains essential.”
The post explicitly frames women outnumbering men in higher education as a positive, yet men outnumbering women is some fields as a negative.
My question is: why? Why is the existence of male dominated fields seen as a problem that needs to be corrected, and women dominating those spaces the morally correct end goal? It feels like they just want women to be overrepresented in everything.
This isn’t just a phenomenon in the workforce, but in general, anything that is majority men, caters to mens interests, or “male-centered” must become egalitarian and policed, whereas women’s spaces get to stay exclusively women. Things like certain spaces in sports industry, the “action” genre in the entertainment sector, male-centered sexual content, etc.
If the principle is “balanced representation is good,” it should apply both ways. Boys now trail girls significantly in college enrollment, graduation rates, and several professional pipelines, and that gets are only fraction of the attention the reverse got, and often the proposed “solutions” are abysmal (just work harder bro, stop whining, etc).
