Reasonably Priced Autofocus EF to L Mount Adapters for S9?

Hello all, been reading up on EF to L mount adapters and everyone seems to recommend the Sigma and Viltrox ones, however they’re both around $200 and still seem to have a host of compatibility or quality control issues! Are there any more reasonably priced options around $100 or lower that function with autofocus?

Help Me Choose Between the Lumix 28-200mm and Sigma 20-200mm!

Hello all, S9 and 18-40mm owner here looking for a versatile lens for florals and insects, and I’ve narrowed it down to either the Lumix 28-200mm or Sigma 20-200. They’re both similar price and similarish size (with caveats) and while the Sigma might first seem the obvious choice, since I’ll be keeping the 18-40 and the two supers each have highly desirable features the other doesn’t, I’ve been going back and forth on which to get. I’m also a ~35% photo, 65% video shooter (mostly handheld). I’ve made a list of pros for each (features of high importance to me with a *) from info gleaned from watching many reviews, and I’d be grateful if anyone with direct experience with either can share their experiences and/or confirm/deny/add to the listed noticeable advantages each has over the other.

Lumix 28-200mm f/4-7.1
- *Lens Stabilization (from what I’ve seen it’s only noticeable difference on the telephoto end?)
- *Smaller and better balanced on the S9 (which in theory would make it more comfortable to walk around with for extended sessions?)
- Slightly brighter throughout the wider half of the shared focal range
- Smoother zoom and focus rings (?)

Sigma 20-200mm f/3.5-6.3
- *More versatile focal range (I will have the 18-40mm but having to change lenses less would still be nice)
- *Sharper corners and telephoto
- *Maximum magnifications in 50-85mm range (MUCH more useful than the 28mm of the Lumix for insects and florals)
- Not too much longer than the Lumix and thinner (seems like it might extend further though and there’s the balance issues)
- *Less ghosting (I haaate how much the 18-40mm suffers from this) and comes with a hood

Versatile Floral/Insect Lens For S9 + 18-40 User?

Hello all, S9 and 18-40mm kit lens owner here since May, been using this combination as a supplement to my main camera (Canon R7 with RF 100-500 and Sigma 17-40 f/1.8) and I’ve greatly appreciated how pocketable (if just barely) the Lumix combo is compared to what is available on Canon, though at the cost of ergonomics. I’ve also been impressed with the image quality output how useful the real-time LUT system is.

I just got back from a trip however and have found a 40mm maximum (as well as the long MFD at that focal length) to be quite limiting for my favorite subjects, those being plants (such as the example pic), animals (not birds and such, my R7 has that covered), and exhibits, all non-flash. I’m looking for suggestions for a relatively compact secondary lens with an appreciably longer maximum focal length than the 18-40, and preferably also versatile. So far I’ve been researching:

Lumix S 24-105mm f/4 Macro - Good focal range, IQ, and magnification but expensive and gargantuan.

LUMIX S 100mm f/2.8 Macro - compact for what it is, fantastic image quality and 1:1 magnification, offers something I don’t currently have for my R7. But somewhat pricey and not a versatile focal length; I would likely end up switching lenses a lot, which is not ideal.

LUMIX S 28-200mm f/4-7.1 MACRO - good image quality, versatile focal length, relatively compact for what it offers, reasonable price used. But best magnification only at the wide end, dark aperture, and a focal range that completely overlaps the equivalent FOV of the Canon RF-S 18-150 I sometimes have access to (which is also much smaller and lighter).

Sigma 20-200 f/3.5-6.3 DG Contemporary - Better IQ than 28-200 and most versatile focal range at same price, max magnification at more usable focal lengths. But large and relies only on IBIS (worse for video on the telephoto end?).

Any other lenses I should consider, or testimonials about the 4 already listed?

Directional Pad and Scroll Wheel Cleaning Do’s and Don’ts? (R7)

Hello all,

The right side of the directional pad on my R7 (which I’ve had since March 2023) has suddenly stopped feeling “clicky” and requires a much harder press to activate. I’m assuming it’s a dirt/debris issue and am wondering what cleaning methods/agents can be used on this camera without damaging things, or if it needs to be taken in for a professional cleaning?

Also, my top scroll wheel with rarely stop registering a single “click-turn” to the right and require two clicks instead. I presume this is also a debris issue, so anyone with experience or advice on cleaning that wheel as well?

Lens Repair Advice (RF-S 18–150)

Hello all,

My partners’s RF-S 18-150mm recently broke from the zoom ring, and from what I can tell some of the plastic screw holders and one of the orange ribbon cables are the only things that actually snapped (I managed to unplug one of the others to prevent further damage). This lens currently goes for over $400 used and while I’ll be shopping around for repair quotes, if it’s over $200 or so I’m not sure what to do. I see the needed replacement parts listed on eBay for much less, does this look like a user serviceable job, and if so anyone have experience repairing this lens (or having it done)?

Quick Access/Button for Auto ISO, Max Monitor Backlight, C3 Dial Profile List, or Re-centering the AF Position?

Hello all, been combing through the manual and Reddit as to whether the following are possible on the S9:

- a button or touch spot to immediately jump from a fixed ISO value to Auto? As seen in the picture I’m pressing that “ISO Auto” box but it does nothing.

- a quick way to temporarily set the monitor backlight to +3 and back, or force Auto mode to use it (it fails to do so for me in bright outdoor situations)

- When in the C3 dial, a way to either default to a certain profile, or a way to always bring up the profile list when the menu button is pressed? The first menu press always defaults to the list, but subsequent presses do not if you move to another page or have My Menu active.

- is there a quicker/easier way to reset the AF box to the center than the two-step process of tapping the screen and pressing display?

Compact Lens Options For Plant Photography? (S9 with 18-40 user)

Hello everyone, new S9 user here who’s been trying out the camera with the 18-40mm kit lens for about a month. I’m still getting used to the camera’s quirks and deficiencies, but one nagging issue has to do with the lens: its maximum magnification occurs at 21mm, but at 40mm the MFD is much longer than I would like for photographing plants (both wild and landscaped). Closeups at wide angles like 21mm produce that unpleasant stretching effect and background extension as well as so I’m looking for a ~40mm+ lens suitable for this type of work that would be roughly as compact as the 18-40mm (doesn’t need to be true macro)? So far from what I’ve read/watched the TTArtisan 40 f/2 seems to also have a long MFD as well as poor close-up image quality, the Sigma 45 f/2.8 has the distance but poor close IQ, and the new LUMIX 40 f/2 has the close IQ but not the MFD. Any suggestions for a 40mm+ lens that might fit the bill?

*first photo is the 18-40 at 21mm at mfd, second photo at 40mm mfd

Hi all, new S9 owner here (already posted a variation of this in the S9 subreddit but got no answers) with the 18-40 kit lens who’s been playing around with it for around a week, watching video guides and reading the manual to learn this new system. There’s a few things I haven’t been able to find answers to however:

- When using touch screen autofocus, is it possible to disable the “resize focal point” feature and just have the touch simply act as a focus? My issue is the resize UI temporarily disables the rest of the UI until you hit the shutter button, not to mention it’s easy to accidentally resize.

- When using touch AF for the 18-40 (and sometimes with the AF-on button too) for video, the autofocus likes to “pull back” before traveling to the target, and often overshoots the target a bit before settling on it. I haven’t seen this behavior in reviews of the lens or S9, is it something I’m doing? AF detection off, 1-area/1-area+, speed between 0-5, and sensitivity +3.

- Is there an easier way to reset the autofocus point to center instead of having to hit “disp” while it’s being moved? And also have it reset after the camera is turned off? The S9 doesn’t have a joystick and along with the AF touch behavior recentering is quite obnoxious.

- Is there a way to just trim the start and end of video clips in-camera without having to use video divide (which is an extra step and a clunky one at that). Also is LUMIX lab really not able to automatically convert RAWs to JPEGs when transferring to a phone?

Hello all, brand new S9 + 18-40 owner here looking for a good minimalist wrist strap to use it with that’s quick remove and strong enough to hold the weight of the camera and potentially a future 24-60 f/2.8. Any recommendations?
