Full ATAK/ Meshtastic guide
By popular demand. I’m going to keep this short and concise, as I’m just an end user and not a tech nerd.
Why Meshtastic and not a cell network?
It’s fully off grid and not dependent on any WiFi or cell network. Whether you’re simply out of cell coverage or the networks go down, you’ll have a usable navigation and communication setup. It’s also secure, Meshtastic comms are encrypted.
Limitations: in order to communicate to your team with Meshtastic, people need to be in range. Think of it like a radio. However, Meshtastic has decent range and every node acts as a repeater. The more you have in an area, the better the coverage. You can also attach a node to a drone and send it into the air and greatly increase range for everyone. Another option for people that have property, or a common training area is to place solar nodes in trees or on buildings to saturate your AO with coverage. Your limit is your imagination.
What you need: First, buy an Android phone. I use a Galaxy S21. Second, buy a mesh node. There are a ton of options, I use a Wio Tracker L1 but will be upgrading soon. I keep mine in a waterproof case on my back panel, if you have the cash you can get some Gucci stuff like an RM-2 or Moros X. That’s it, all you need is a phone and mesh node. I bought everything off Amazon for $200 total
How to set up: On your phone download the Meshtastic app, ATAK, and the ATAK Meshtastic plugin. Connect your Meshtastic device to your phone via Bluetooth. In ATAK, load the mesh plugin into ATAK. When it’s working, you should see the Meshtastic logo on your phone screen as well as your call sign and grid displayed
Offline use: While your phone is connected to WiFi take the time and download a ton offline maps, as you need them to use ATAK off grid with Meshtastic.
I left out a couple small setting changes to make, but this is the basic how to guide to show how easy it is to get set up. It’s not rocket surgery, and is an awesome capability. Any questions, please comment and I’ll answer as well as I can. Enjoy gents.
