Old John is a floribunda that'll stay a compact 3' x 3'. His flowers will average 2.5". Mine is just a baby so he resembles a miniature rose, but I can't fault the brilliant orange color.

I'm creating a new rose garden and planted the bushes earlier this year. I dug down 24" because the "soil" is 50:50 rocks and heavy clay with no organic matter. I'm now ready to dig up and improve the soil in the rest of the bed. How deep should I go?

I'm creating a rose garden based on a picture that I saw (pic 1). In the middle is a bird bath but I'm concerned about it being in full sun all day. Instead, I'm thinking about installing a "disappearing" fountain in which the water is in an underground reservoir (pic 2 is an example). Would that type of fountain help keep the water cooler and thus preserve its quality?
