transfer student — OIE hold blocking registration, only 1 major course available (already full/waitlisted), what can I do?

I’m a transfer student at Georgia Tech and my orientation is on July 15.

Right now, I have an OIE Check-In hold because my I-20 request is still under review. Because of this hold, I cannot register for any classes at the moment.

The problem is that I likely cannot wait until orientation to register. As of now, almost all of my required ECE courses are either full or already heavily waitlisted. The only ECE course I’m technically eligible to take this semester is already full, and the waitlist is almost full as well.

This leaves me in a situation where I may not be able to take any meaningful number of major courses this semester, which would seriously delay my academic plan.

I’ve already contacted OIE, but I’m not sure how quickly this can be resolved.
Has anyone experienced something similar as a transfer student?

is there any way to expedite OIE hold removal?
or get overrides into closed ECE courses?
or handle registration before orientation in situations like this?
Any advice would be really appreciated. I feel a bit stuck right now and I’m trying to avoid falling behind immediately in my first semester here.

math 1554 linear algebra

I am a transfer student and I took differential equations&linear algebra in my previous school. So that course was evaluated as math 2x52. However, I am a ECE student so I need to take ECE 2026 in my first semester as a transfer student. Is there any way that I can get credits for math 1554 before I start my classes in Fall 2026?
I first thought I was eligible for cce, however I already got math 2x52 credit with that course so I don't think cce would work. does anyone know related to this?
to get ASE, I have to wait for the semester to be end.

Transfer: prereq issues with ECE 2040 and permission/override

Hi everyone,
I’m a new transfer student to Georgia Tech. I’m currently facing a major hurdle with my course registration.
I really need to take ECE 2040 this semester, but my transfer credits from my previous university didn't officially clear the prerequisite requirements due to differences in lab components, so I didn’t get the phys2211, 2212 creds. even though I have completed phys I, II courses with solid grades.

Because ECE 2040 is a prerequisite for almost all my following major courses, if I can’t take it this semester, my graduation plan will be delayed by a year. I reached out to the department to ask them to accept my phys as phys2211, 2212 but it’s a strict system issue since I don’t have labs.

Has anyone been in a similar situation?

  1. Is it common to request a course permission/override directly from the professor for this type of prerequisite issue?
  2. Any tips on how to effectively approach the professor to prove I have the necessary background knowledge?
Any advice or experiences you could share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Transfer student question: Prerequisite issues with Physics and ECE 2040

Hi everyone, I’m an incoming transfer EE student and I’m currently facing a bit of a hurdle regarding my course registration and prerequisite requirements.

I successfully completed Physics I and II (lectures) at my previous institution with A's, but because my former school did not offer a lab component, those credits were not fully articulated as Physics I/II at Tech.

The issue is that ECE 2040 is a core prerequisite for most of my upcoming ECE coursework, and I cannot register for ECE 2040 without completing both Physics I and II (with labs). This is effectively creating a bottleneck that threatens to delay my graduation plan significantly.

I am wondering if any fellow students or upperclassmen have dealt with a similar situation:

Is it possible to petition to take both Physics I and II simultaneously in my first semester to clear these prerequisites?

Has anyone had success in getting a lab requirement waived or handled through a petition/special approval when the previous institution simply didn't offer the lab?

Who would be the best person to contact to discuss this? I’m planning to reach out to my ECE academic advisor (but they seemed pretty strict... 😢 should I contact PHYS dept? ), but I wanted to see if there’s a more effective way to approach this or any specific department I should talk to first.

Any advice or experiences you could share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Advice on finding roommates? Platforms?

Hi everyone! I am an incoming engineering transfer student of Georgia Tech starting this fall. Since I'm new to Atlanta and don't have a local network. I'm finding the housing search a bit challenging.

I've tried searching on Facebook, but my account keeps getting flagged for spam. (just joined and keep posting and requesting messages haha... I even added my personal info but it doesn't work)

Could anyone point me toward the most reliable platforms or methods to find roommates for off-campus housing? I'm looking for something transit-accessible and budget-friendly. (I won't have a car)

Are there any specific servers or platforms that are more active than Facebook? any advice on how to navigate this as an international student would be greatly appreciated!!
