Should I take a 3 semester co-op at Landis+Gyr or hold out for a startup internship?

Hey everyone, looking for some advice on a co-op decision.

I am a Computer Engineering junior at Georgia Tech going into my third year. I have an offer for a Product and Technologies co-op at Landis+Gyr, a $1.7 billion smart metering and grid modernization company headquartered in Alpharetta, GA. The pay is $22/hr first semester, $23 second, and $24 third, all full time 40 hours a week.

The program is 3 alternating semesters, so it would look something like fall 2026 working, spring 2027 back in school, summer 2027 free for another internship, fall 2027 working again, and so on. It would push my graduation back to spring 2029 instead of spring 2028 but I am okay with that.

The role rotates between Product Owner, Product Management, and Solution Practice which includes technical architecture and proof of concepts for smart grid solutions.

My background is software and AI focused. I have shipped full stack AI apps to production, won a hackathon, and I lean toward startups, deep tech, or defense for my career. I am open to relocating post grad.

My concerns are:

  • The work is mostly product management heavy, not pure engineering
  • I am worried it locks me up during falls when most companies recruit for summer internships
  • I want to eventually land a high paying engineering or technical role at a startup or defense company and am not sure this co-op gets me there

This is my only offer right now. Should I take it or keep grinding for something more technical this summer?

Happy to answer any questions.

GA Tech’s email phishing protection is awful

It’s ridiculous how many phishing emails I receive from random other students.

I’m sure GA Tech has some defenses in place to prevent this, but I’m still receiving at least one blatantly malicious email every week.

There’s no reason a student should be able to send mass emails to other students, let alone send a blatantly malicious email. We shouldn’t have to rely on people deleting and reporting these emails as much as it seems we are. The behavior is relatively easy to detect and block before users even receive the malicious email in most cases.

Countless organizations of similar target value with far less resources than GA Tech have far better phishing defenses.

How dumb is it to not take an internship?

For better context , this internship is in the fall and I’ve worked there for almost a year now. I love working there but I’m an incoming senior. This summer I’ll be working at Bloomberg but I don’t know how it would be getting a return offer from them and this other internship is almost guaranteed. I really wanted to try and enjoy my senior year and actually make meaningful connections since I didn’t get to do that all 4 years and do more clubs. I also want to raise my GPA a bit since it was extremely difficult doing so while working and taking classes. Any advice is helpful!

Employees on GLP-1s with BCBS - can we talk?

I was prescribed Wegovy for severe obstructive sleep apnea, but BCBS keeps denying it. If anyone has been able to get them approved, I’d love to talk to you.

Kinetic Management are Completely Unprofessional

Lovely building, well maintained. Great amentities and proximity to Georgia Tech. The student leasing assistants are amazing and were very helpful when I had questions and during my move/pre-leasing process. However, due to an incident that occurred 2 months prior to my lease ending, I am greatly disappointed in the way I was treated as a 2 year resident in both this building and momentum. Especially a high-end property like this. The older management are completely unprofessional and dismissive to any of my concerns or questions. I was treated very poorly and their communication was not acceptable for a property like this. Additionally, the kitchen island stools that are provided are very cheap and broke almost every time someone sat on it. The maintenance/cleaning team would also constantly leave my lights on all day after they would walk in to inspect/clean the other vacant rooms. I am very very dissatisfied with my interactions with management and will not be renewing my lease or ever leasing from a toll brothers property again.

Summer Economics 2105 cancellation

How TF is this allowed? I did my part: I set up my registration plan for summer and fall in advance so that I got into all of my classes as soon as my registration window opened.

Now I'm fucked. The two other courses that I need + are being offered this summer are either full or in-person/clash with my work schedule.

I'm so tired of the bs. Like damn GT just take my money and let me take this course. I don't care if I'm the only person taking this online/asynchronous course. I do care about graduating on time.

Injury Recovery during Semester

Hey everyone, just looking to ask some questions for people who have recovered from surgeries or severe injuries (broken bones, etc) during the semester.

I'm wondering to ask how the experience was as, I am looking to undergo a procedure for a weightlifting injury, which will limit my dominant arm mobility for most of the semester and that I will need physical therapy for.

I debating whether or not it is worth trying to recover and remain a student or to take a medical leave semester. I have heard the office of disability services is quite accommodating and the process is manageable but I want to hear people's actual experiences to get a more accurate description of the experience.

Do I need a car if i’m living on campus?

I’m an incoming freshman and my car just broke down and is prohibitively expensive to fix. Will i be able to get by without a car living on campus? My parents live about 45 minutes away from campus.

Catalyst Midtown vs Paloma West Midtown?

Some friends and I are currently looking at getting a lease for about a year at their 4x4 options in both. We’ve been reading a lot of reviews for both places. For Catalyst, it seems like most of the negative reviews came during the construction period, and for Paloma, we saw that they’ve changed their name multiple times. Honestly, we were close to signing a lease with Paloma until we heard that.

From someone who has lived at either place, what are your thoughts? In terms of safety, is Paloma really worse? I know both places have had issues with car break-ins. Only one of us is planning to bring a car, so we’re also wondering how parking and overall security feel on a day-to-day basis.

Also, have either of the places had any noticeable pest problems like roaches or bugs?

The annual parking pass is $795 right now. How long has it been $795? When did it get raised in the past? Was it ever lowered?

How Long Does it Take for Spring 26 Degrees to Show Up on NSC?

Recent Spring 26 graduate, I was able to see on OSCAR under degree verification tab that my degree was awarded (same on unofficial transcript and DegreeWork). However, on National Student Clearinghouse, it's still showing no degree record from GT. Does anyone know how long it usually take after degree conferral for it to show up on NSC?

Athletic Fee for an Entirely Online Class

I am taking one entirely ONLINE class this summer. I understand charging tuition and a technology fee, but what the hell am I paying an athletic fee for? I thought these athletic fees paid for students to attend GT sporting events (aside from football) for "free", but if I'm not mistaken there aren't any sports going on over the summer, so what gives?

EE vs CompE for FPGA engineering roles

Hello everyone,

I just finished my first year at Tech as an EE major. I am aiming to break into the VLSI chip design, FPGA, ASICs, etc space at HFT firms, and genuinely don’t know if I should switch from EE to CompE and take the CHEA/Sys Arc threads, or stay in EE (Sig processing/ circuit tech threads) and take CompE electives. I’m scared that the CompE classes don’t dive deep enough into the physics of things, while the EE classes don’t go as broad into the relevant coursework required. Additionally, the CompE electives are sometimes restricted only to CompE majors, so I won’t be able to take the classes certain semesters.

If there is anyone who took these classes that could help guide me and potentially correct my logic please feel free to respond 🙏 .

Academic Warning, how screwed am I?

For a bit of context, I’m a transfer student who just finished my first year at Georgia Tech. I came from another university with a 4.0 GPA, so adjusting to Tech was honestly a rough experience for me.

During my fall semester, I struggled to keep up and ended up with a mix of A’s, B’s, and a couple of D’s. Needless to say, I was incredibly discouraged. Coming into the spring semester, I had a mandatory advising meeting where I was given advice on how to improve and succeed at Tech. I started attending PLUS sessions, spent an hour every week with my math TA, and made a serious effort to stay on top of my work and complete assignments on time.

But leading up to my first Physics 2 exam, I started dealing with a level of anxiety that felt overwhelming and honestly unfamiliar to me. I’m a Georgia native, and I’m extremely grateful to be able to attend Tech through the Zell Miller Scholarship, but after my disappointing first semester, I think the pressure and fear of failing started affecting my confidence badly.

Before that first exam, I had what I can only describe as a small panic attack, and I ended up underperforming. Unfortunately, that cycle repeated itself throughout the semester during exams. I know this might sound like a “feel bad for me” post, but I genuinely wanted to ask if anyone has gone through something similar or has advice.

Does Stamps offer counseling or resources for situations like this? Has anyone here managed to come back from a really difficult year at Tech? I’m honestly scared about losing my financial aid, and I don’t really know who to talk to about all of this. It feels like everyone around me has their life together while mine feels like it’s falling apart.

Econ majors/alumni: how would you rank the econ classes you’ve taken from easiest to hardest?

ve already checked the course reviews/older threads, but I’d love to hear more personal opinions especially on classes that surprised you by being easier or harder than expected (besides the obvious weed-outs).

Things like workload, grading style, math intensity, and professor differences would also be helpful.

TAing ruined my GPA... Don't do it.

Was a TA for credit this semester and did everything asked of me, even volunteering to do extra office hours and proctoring of exams exams. They gave me a B, ruining my 4.0 GPA. Now I know people are gonna say stop being a perfectionist but isn't that crazy?? I volunteer so much of my own time for a single credit, not even paid, and they ruin my perfect streak that I've fought for for the last 3 years. Crazy.
