No POOs at 510/509 exit at Union?

I never see any of our Provincial Offence Officers checking tickets there. Lots of folks get on at Harborfront and Queens Quay without tapping the vending machine.

The narrow exit is perfect for ensuring noone gets by without showing they paid their fare.

Anyone have any thoughts about that.

Great Line 1 train driver

Contributors to this sub are often complaining about rude TTC staff and garbled announcements.

However, I feel we should recognize good service when we experience it.

Today I had such an awesome experience. Riding Line 1 train #5786 going towards Finch around 730pm, we had a driver who very courteously reminded the passengers who had held up the doors at TMU and Wellessley that such behaviour delayed other passengers and was explicitly prohibited as evident from the sticker on the door.

When we were approaching Lawrence he clarified, in a clear voice, that due to track work near Finch we would be travelling slowly.

Thank you to that train driver for engaging with us passengers!

Before Sean became famous

This is a still from the 1961 British comedy, On The Fiddle (American title: Operation Snafu) made a year before Dr. No was released and made Sean an international star.

The industry publication, The Monthly Film Review made this comment about Sean’s performance:

Connery is almost equally believable. His slow, conscience-ridden and rather gormless Pascoe is the ideal foil for Pope's quick-wittedness. Only at the end does the film lose contact with his essential character when he miraculously demonstrates a wily bravery in besting the enemy.

Escalators - can they not have motion detection?

I often see these long escalators running constantly, and sometimes empty. Like the one in the photo at Laird on Line 5. They must consume a ton of electricity.

Could they not be fitted with motion detection technology like in some Asian and European subways so they commence moving only when passengers are on the stairs?

Could save lots of electricity, especially on holidays and non-peak hours.

Delays on Line 1

The first announcement came at 5.30pm indicating a delay due to medical emergency at Union Station. Only two trains have gone by since then and a crowd has piled up at TMU.

And Sean a bit later

This is probably later in 1950s when he seriously began bodybuilding.

What a difference a few years makes.

Early picture of Sean

Likely an early-1950s picture when he was participating in body-building contests.

Those high-waisted, double-pleated pants also don’t seem very high fashion.

He still had a decent hairline back then.

Marshal Pétain residence in Vichy

Was visiting Vichy for the day. It is an exquisitly maintained town and must have been affluent for the past two hundred years on account of being a spa town, like 12 others in Europe where the Royalty and rich “took in the waters”.

Was intrigued to discover this little estate on the waterfront where French Marshall Philippe Pétain lived for the four years as head of the Vichy collaborationist government.

Called the Pavilion Sévigné, it was a 18th century house.

I also discovered that Vichy was chosen as the base after exploring Claremont-Ferrand, despite its small size, due to its excellent train and telephone connections with the rest of Europe on account of the rich and famous visitors.

In a different world

This photograph made me wonder whether Jean-Paul would have made a good Bond (of course without the accent) after Sean.

The similarities between this scene and the beach scene, where Bond kills Largo’s henchman, Vargas, with a spear gun in Thunderball are striking.

And, that two-piece bikini seems to be Ursula’s favourite costume.

This is likely from the 1965 action adventure, “Up To His Ears” (French: Les Tribulations d’un Chinois en Chine) that starred Jean-Paul with Ursula.

TIL: Sean directed a social issues documentary in 1967

The Bowler and the Bunnet was a Scottish television documentary programme on STV, directed and presented by Sean.

It is the only film ever directed by him, although he was accused of actively interfering in his director’s work in films later in his career (eg Irwin Kerschner for NSNA).

The documentary, filmed in black and white, was a critical examination of the Fairfield Experiment, whereby the industrialist Sir Iain Maxwell Stewart and the trades union introduced new working practices at the shipyard of Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company in Glasgow.

It was released onto DVD by the British Film Institute as part of their Tales from the Shipyard boxed-set in February 2011.

The title comes from the tradition where bowler hats were worn by managers within the shipyards while bonnets (cloth caps) were worn by the workers.

BTS Goldfinger

The chemistry between Honor Blackman (aka Pussy Galore) and Connery electrified the screen in Goldfinger.

Can anyone place this scene in the movie?

Who is the third person?

A BTS photo, made during the filming (likely of Ursula’s entry from the sea) of Dr No at the estate of socialite Mrs Minnie Simpson, at Roaring River, Ocho Rios, Jamaica during Jan/Feb. 1962.

Does anyone recognize the third person in this photo?

Why does the subway slow down between Eglinton & Davisville?

Ever since I moved to Eglinton almost 30 years ago I noticed that the subway intermittently slows down to a crawl as soon as it leaves Eglinton even when the previous train has left almost five minutes ago.

There is never anyone working on the tracks during the day.

Is there something unique with that terrain that there is always something wrong that needs fixing which is why the subway train slows down?

Seems like a photo from the set of Dr No in Jamaica. Probably the location of the waterfall scene where Ursula emerges from the sea.

Can anyone identify the brand of what Sean is drinking? Its not Red Stripe beer.

And, whose legs could those be?

I saw this sign on the 103 bus going North on Mt Pleasant. Tried accessing it on my phone but that signal was nowhere to be found by my iPhone.

Has anyone discovered this WiFI on a bus.
