I built a real time TTC disruptions webapp. I hope you guys like TransitBeat!

Hi folks! I’m Ray, a UofT student that rides the TTC daily. I wanted to make a better alternative for people to check disruptions that affect their commutes. After a month, transitbeat.ca is now in public beta.

Here are the highlights:

  1. Delay duration estimates: I use historical data to estimate how long different types of delays take on different lines. I also plan to use ML to improve this estimation down the road.
  2. Optimization: the average TTC rider is likely on their phones right before and during transit, and sometimes in conditions with very slow wifi. TransitBeat is extremely mobile focused and lightweight, and I’ve tested the speed and performance extensively.
  3. Personalization: I think most riders don’t care about a lot of the disruptions on the system, only the sections they regularly use. TransitBeat enables users to save their regular commute routes, and when those routes are disrupted, it’s obvious at a glance. In the future, with user accounts, we can also provide user notifications for disruptions on the selected routes.
  4. The whole package: we include info such as wayfinding, travel time estimates, next train scheduled arrivals for specific stations, etc. TransitBeat has a live map with a clear legend regarding which stations are in regular service, and which stations are not. It includes facility outages info, shuttle bus availability, etc.

I recognize that there are lots of improvements still to be made, and this is an ongoing project that will continue to be developed. I would love to hear what you guys think. All suggestions are welcome.

All devices are supported, but optimized for mobile. Please follow u/TransitBeat and x.com/TransitBeatCA for future updates! Hopefully transitbeat.ca will be as helpful as I imagined.

Escalators - can they not have motion detection?

I often see these long escalators running constantly, and sometimes empty. Like the one in the photo at Laird on Line 5. They must consume a ton of electricity.

Could they not be fitted with motion detection technology like in some Asian and European subways so they commence moving only when passengers are on the stairs?

Could save lots of electricity, especially on holidays and non-peak hours.

Public art!

Hi folks. Just curious about everyone’s favourite bits of public art around the TTC. Spadina Summer Under All Seasons at Dupont and The Commuters at St Clair West are among mine (and both featured on my Heritage Toronto tour of TTC public art which runs for the first time tomorrow!)

Does anyone know when the full 510 Spadina will get full signal priority?

I’m taking the 510 now, and I noticed only certain intersections (Dundas, College) get priority from left turns.

Anyone know when it’ll get rolled out at all intersections?

Gabe’s plan to fix the 506 press conference

TL:DR: If elected, the 506 would get full unconditional signal priority, dual point switches, level boarding.

As well as modern signs showing when the next streetcar will arrive, benches at streetcar stops, and dedicated space from Yonge to Manning Ave.

If this goes through, this would be a clear model to implement on other troublesome routes like the Queen and Dundas streetcars!

Taking the streetcar? You will need to press the button to open the doors

To save the air conditioning system on the streetcars during this heat wave, the TTC has asked its streetcar drivers to not open the doors, but have riders do it themselves. This is to keep the air conditioning units on the streetcars from getting over stressed. This applies to all streetcars, including those on lines 5&6.

Which will be used on the next tap: my TTC Monthly Pass or Cash Funds on the same Presto Card?

Hello. I have cash funds (about $20) on my Presto Card (Apple Wallet) but decided to add a TTC Monthly Pass for July on the same card.

When I tap my card next time, will my funds be deducted from the cash or will my TTC pass be automatically used?

Light trails of light rail.

These photos were shot on the CN Tower's fiftieth anniversary, and I am incredibly happy with the results. This was my first time shooting long exposures at night with streetcars, but will not be my last. I will be posting my first half of 2026 TTC photos by mid July, just finishing edits right now.

I also just finished my first edit/experience with DaVinci Resolve, the link is below. Feedback/criticism is appreciated, as a high school student wanting to improve what looks best for others eyes.

Thank you to all TTC operators for being cool with photos (at least in my experience) I got a lot of smiles and honks.

Just got grief from fare inspector because my transfer window expired during my ride

I know this came up the other day and there were many comments saying this specific scenario was a non-starter because the transfer is valid as long as you board within the window. She specifically told me that, even tho I had tapped at 10:43, my transfer expired at 10:56 (original tap was 8:56) and it was now 11:05. I had to get off anyway so she let me go, but just a heads up.

TTC fare evasion

So I forgot to pay for the streetcar as I thought I had a paper transfer on me which was really stupid on my part. I got caught at Bathurst and said to the POO stupidly, that I didn’t pay and I was flustered and frustrated by encountering them and didn’t get out my words correctly. From my understanding what I said in the moment is legally binding regardless of my blunder, so I’m not going to fight the ticket that way. I just want to know what I can do to pay the ticket. I’m a student and this is a lot of money for me and I was wondering if there was a way to do in monthly payments instead or reducing it. Please let me know

Provincial Offences Officers this morning at Victoria Park Station

I think this is long overdue. 👍

They are checking Presto cards on people as they come from the bus bay area towards the subway stairs. This morning they were also on the bus bays talking with people.

Cityplace is a transit DESERT. How should it be connected to the network?

This destination-dense part of Downtown has… no GO or TTC access. The 510 is too far west, Union too far east, Harbourfront too south, and 504 too north.

How do you see this area getting connected to the network in the long term? What SHOULD be built?

Thank you to the ttc staff this month

Just wanted to shout out the staff of the ttc, all the workers and volunteers assisting this crazy month and keeping it chill. Toronto holds a large scale Pride every year, and with FIFA on top, it has been a lot for the city to handle, as well as the other early summer festivities. I'm really happy to see that it was able to do so, and that as a transit user, all the main stations I was at had friendly and perceptive staff ready to assist in navigating the journeys.

There wasn't even more delays than usual imo. I've noticed the last little while less delays as a whole than 5 or so months ago perhaps? Used to be 1/3 times I rode there was some issue or delay. In the last while it's been much more reliable. All and all I am very happy to be in a place with such efficiency for such high-stress environment.

Edit: oh my god the ac today is actually a life saver. They are blasting that shit in this heat wave and I am now a ttc simp TwT Thank you to all the people who have worked so hard this season to make moving through the city easy and stable.

Sign/share the petition for RapidTO on College Street!

Heads up Uni-Rosedale! Gabe Blanc (the ward candidate) announced if elected, he'll push for RapidTO lanes for the 506 College streetcar from Yonge to Manning Ave.

Not only that, he'll push for dual-point switches, full unconditional signal priority, and a left turn ban along the route.

This would shorten the travel time from Yonge to Little Italy in just 10 minutes.

Please sign/share to make this badly-needed change a reality,

and if you live in University-Rosedale and want a better TTC, this is the candidate to keep an eye on.

------------------------------

I don't live in Uni Rosedale, but I ran into Gabe at the Church St pedestrian pilot and I think he'd be a great councillor

Not sure if this has been posted before but thought it was cool!

Just outside Hillcrest - I hope the TTC puts more of these in service :-)

Union Station is such a vibe today. (Sunday, June 28)

Jays fans, Canada shirts and soccer balls everywhere, Pride Pride Pride in all its colours, bikinis, and mesh, soooo many women in cowboy boots/knee highs heading north to something, tourists snapping shots of their families, and just a massive, positive hustle and bustle. Genuinely so lively because of the flurry of events happening. Toronto felt extra cool today.
