Today we are taking another step back and helping newer users get started with one of the more confusing parts of 3D Canvas:

HOW TO: Basic 3D Scene Setup

Now that 3D Canvas is FREE, we know a lot of people are trying it out for the first time, and the scene configuration menus can feel a bit overwhelming at first.

Check out the video to learn the basics of 3D scene setup, Quick Setup, Fog of War, particles, and the main 3D Canvas settings for new users.

With the 2026 Summer 3D Mapmaking Competition currently running, this is also a good starting point for anyone wanting to create their first maps and get more comfortable with 3D Canvas.

How to enter:

Create a map (or multiple maps) in 3D Canvas, then share it to the Community Map Browser by right-clicking on the scene and selecting “Share Scene.”

Title and describe it however you like, and make sure to use your Discord or Patreon username in the Author field.

For anyone joining during the competition, the Foundry Advanced Tier will be free for the first month. This includes access to both 3D Canvas content and all Baileywiki 2D scenes and Foundry assets.

Judging Criteria:

Maps submitted to the competition will be judged based on the following criteria:

Overall Creativity – Are the available assets used in creative and unique ways?

Design Quality – Does the map feel well-built, immersive, and visually strong?

Technical Execution – Does the scene make strong use of active tiles, triggers, effects, automation, and advanced features where appropriate?

Overall Scene Performance – Does the map run smoothly and efficiently without requiring extreme hardware?

Overall Playability – Does the scene feel good to run at the table and support strong gameplay for players and GMs?
