Recruiters/ATS admins: Can protected veteran or disability self-ID answers actually affect an application behind the scenes?

I’m curious how this actually works behind the scenes in an ATS.

I’m a protected veteran, and I also have anxiety that could lead me to answer “Yes” to the voluntary disability self-identification question. Sometimes I select “Yes,” and other times I’ve considered selecting “I prefer not to answer.”

I understand these questions are supposed to be voluntary and separate from the hiring decision. What I’m trying to understand is what actually happens technically.

Can recruiters or hiring managers see whether an applicant selected:

• Protected veteran: Yes
• Disability: Yes
• Disability: Prefer not to answer

Can any of those fields be used in ATS filters, screening rules, reports, ranking, or automated knockout logic?

The reason I’m asking is that I’ve had several applications where I get through the initial recruiter/screener call, the recruiter tells me the next step will be an interview, and then I receive a rejection instead.

I’m not claiming discrimination. I’m trying to determine whether I’m looking in the wrong place for the cause.

For those who have actually worked in recruiting, HR, or configured systems like Workday, Greenhouse, iCIMS, Taleo, etc.:

What can the recruiter actually see?
What can the hiring manager see?
Are those self-ID fields technically isolated from candidate-selection data?

And does choosing “prefer not to answer” behave any differently behind the scenes than answering yes or no?

I’d especially like to hear from recruiters, HR professionals, or ATS administrators who know how these systems are configured rather than speculation from the applicant side.

Project Instructions need a clear button and character counter

I use Projects all the time, and I’m constantly tweaking the instructions.

The 8,000-character limit is fine. The way the app handles it is not.

There’s no visible character count, so I end up pasting everything, getting an error, holding Backspace forever to delete chunks, pasting again, and repeating the whole process.

On mobile, it’s especially painful.

A simple Clear button and a live counter like 7,842 / 8,000 would make this so much easier.

Small feature, huge quality-of-life improvement for people who use Projects heavily. Pretty Please!

Google Drive is easily my favorite ChatGPT plugin

Google Drive is my favorite ChatGPT plugin right now.

I started using it for a digital products business I’m building, but now I use it for my job search and pretty much everything else too.

For the business, Claude does most of the building. ChatGPT helps with strategy, product reviews, listings, and keeping everything organized. Google Drive is where all the files live.

I’ve become a little obsessed with keeping everything organized. Numbered folders, consistent file names, archived versions, and everything neatly kept where it belongs.

One of my favorite things is that I can just type:
“Review the X folder.”

ChatGPT goes into Drive, finds the new files, reviews them, and tells me what needs fixed.

I can also ask it to clean up a folder or my entire drive, move files where they belong, archive old versions, or organize a project that has gotten messy.

I use the same setup for my job search. It helps me find jobs that fit my background, build & tailor my resume, then files it into the right folders

My biggest surprise hasn’t really been the AI itself. It’s how much more organized I am now.

I love getting this time back! It used to take forever, do i got sloppy. Anyone else using it this way?

Free ANG planning tools I built to pay it forward

Hey guys, I build simple ANG planning tools and wanted to pay it forward a bit.

https://mongold.gumroad.com/

No email wall, no catch, no weird sales funnel crap. Just download anything that helps.

Right now I have tools for ANG retirement, retirement decision timing, career alignment, mentorship, and career planning. I may add more in the future.

Retiring or transitioning in the ANG can be ridiculously hard because personnel, DFAS, VA, medical, education, retention, and other offices all own different pieces. These tools are just meant to help organize the chaos and give people a place to start.

I’m open to feedback too. If something is confusing, missing, or could be better, let me know. If you have ideas for another ANG tool that would help people, I’m all ears.
