Hey r/iosgaming community,

Since it’s Developer Saturday, I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on solo: ArtQuest: Cinema Quiz & Trivia.

I love trivia games, but I was genuinely tired of apps with overly simple questions or loops that feel like they are just trying to farm ad impressions. I wanted to build a game tailored for true cinephiles—people who remember the smallest details of cult classics or obsess over TV show season finales.

How it works: The game features a progressive difficulty system. The early stages are a smooth ride, but as you advance, the questions scale up aggressively. You’ll need to be an absolute "film guru" to clear the later levels.

No Forced Ads: As a player myself, I hate pop-up ads that ruin the gameplay flow. There are zero forced ads in ArtQuest. I integrated RevenueCat for a transparent, one-time premium unlock/subscription model that removes optional ads permanently and grants extra hints for the brutal stages.

I designed the interface to feel dark, clean, and cinematic. I would love for you to try it out and give me your worst critiques on the difficulty balance and UI.

Thank you so much for supporting indie developers, and I'll be in the comments to answer any questions or chat about cinema!

Marketing a B2C trivia app with $0 budget: Is ASO enough, or are organic short-form videos the only way now?

Hey everyone,

I recently launched a B2C quiz/trivia app focused on a specific niche (hardcore cinema and TV shows) on both iOS and Android. The tech stack is React Native + Supabase, and I’m using RevenueCat to test monetization.

Since I am a solo bootstrap developer with a $0 marketing budget, I'm trying to figure out the most sustainable business and growth model for an entertainment/trivia app in 2026.

For those who have experience in the entertainment or utility app space, I would love to get your insights on a few business dilemmas I'm currently facing:

1. Organic Growth: ASO vs. Short-Form Content (TikTok/Reels)

Trivia is a highly saturated market on the app stores. Is it still possible to rank organically using strict ASO strategies (targeting long-tail keywords like "movie trivia guru" etc.), or is the modern meta completely reliant on making viral TikToks/Shorts to drive traffic? Where should I spend 80% of my energy?

2. Monetization Strategy: Paywall vs. Ads for Trivia

Right now, I'm testing a premium tier via RevenueCat (ad-free experience + extra hints/hardcore levels). However, general consensus seems to lean towards ads/consumables for trivia apps because user session times can be short. In your experience, do trivia users actually convert to subscriptions/one-time premium unlocks, or should I pivot to a hybrid ad model early on?

3. Retention Tactics

Entertainment apps usually suffer from high churn once the user finishes the initial content. I built a progressive difficulty system to keep users challenged, but what are some other low-overhead retention loops you've seen work? (e.g., daily challenges, push notification strategies).

(Note: Per the sub rules, I am not linking or naming the app here as I am looking for genuine business/marketing advice, not promotion. If you want to roast the landing page or UX, let me know and I can DM you the link).

Thanks in advance for sharing your wisdom!
