"It's right behind me, isn't it?"

Boe is made by Sophie, Noctis by me :>

Got inspired by a silly little idea on the discord and then we got this.

Boe belongs to Sophie, Noctis is my OC.

Noctis in here is actually an older drawing of mine (I promise he has bigger wing muscles now ;-;), good to see it found a purpose lul

Smaugust Day 4 (yes Im behind)

Alastor if he was more of a bird than fluffy lizard.

Its my 10th day in a row of work tomorrow. I do not have the energy to even breathe, so those sketches are sadly very rushed 😔 I want to get better quality (for my usual drawings) done later on tho.

Smaugust day 2 (day 3 skipped due to lack of colour useage)

Alastors eye close up.

Yep, thats it.

Im very busy today so this was squeezed in-between. August is no fun due to insane working days...ahem...10 days in a row. Do I gotta say more?

On the top comes that Im working on commissions and private projects still, so...yes.

What colour theories are out there?

I only know about the Rose theory. And tbh, the amount of braindead roses I met adds up very well.

Are there any other popular colour theories?

Can also be your own from your experience. Im curious.

Art tip 3: How tail designs play into function

"I dont know what tail to give my dragon, there is so many options...what do I pick? How do I pick a design that fits the theme?"

This post is all about about worldbuilding and pure design.

So, the pictures above are all tails that I drew in my practise phase.

Tails are more than accessoires for fancy tailtips. They bring balance, help a dragon while flying and can also be used as a weapon or fifth hand. To explain what I mean better, Im gonna break down those designs I made.

Slide one:

The Tail above is one of those fancy tailtip designs. We all know that male birds have crazy tail feathers, yea? This same concept can be used on dragons. Not only to attract mates, but also to fight off rivals and other dragons.

The tail below is a weapon - thick and layered with big spikes. This is the tail of a dragon who uses those spikes as defense. The spikes are obviously the weapon, but the thickness is necessary for the muscles to smash this massive tail into enemies. If its too thin, it wont create as much impact and weakens the attack. Even if the spikes were thrown nargacuga style, a thick structure is still needed to whip around the tail quickly

Slide two:

The tail above is a hint at butterfly wings. Fake eyes are a fun thing to add and to scare off bigger dragons than you.

The tail below is, well, basic. But basic does not equal bad. Sometimes a tail helps balancing and just so happens to have some sort of tailtip.

Slide three:

The tail above is thick and has fish-like fins. This is the type of tail you see on fish dragons and swimming dragons. If a tail should help with swimming, it needs powerful muscles. Powerful muscles = thick tail.

The tail below is inspired by cat tails. Cats use their tails for balance, and the same thing can be applied for dragons while walking and flying.

Slide four:

The tail above is paired with some fins. This creates some uplifting while flying due to the membranes and helps carry some weight. Great for dragons that focus on flying.

The tail below is all fur. Furry tail, furry tip. In general, fur helps regulating body temperature and helps staying warm. This incidicates that furred dragons live in colder climates.

Slide five:

The tail above is another weapon. Along with spikes, stingers are a great way to display that your dragon carries some sort of poison or Paralysis defense. Stingers can also be hidden underneath scales as a surprise weapon.

The tail below is a classic GOT dragon fin design. Sometimes you really just want to add fins.

Slide six:

The tail above is inspired by monkeys. Now, its thick, because it required powerful muscles to grip something or hold weight, and it could also have claws at the end for maximal grip. Maybe to hang down trees?

The tail below is literally a blade-like end that can cut through scales and other things? Definitely a weapon. It could also be swung around, which is why I made the tail thick.

Slide seven:

The tail above is literally a morningstar. Heavy tailtip end and thick tail, definitely a weapon to be swung around.

The tail below is designed for flying, but brought to the next level. The giant sail can be used as a rudder and helps carrying weight while flying. The fins along the side help support the tailweight more. Your go-to for realistic flying dragons.

In general, always use real life animals for tail references and uses. Its easy to get lost in fictional creature designs without a particular guideline.

Hope this helps lol

Just saved this Yellowjacket that was about to drown

My friend was drinking coke and put it away, when she picked it back up this poor thing was about to drown in there. I put it on my hand first and then put it on this towel to dry off. Was probably just in time...

She was shocked I did it so casually lol

Art tip 2: How to avoid same face syndrome

(Slide pictures along the text for better understanding)

"Oh no all my dragons look indifferendable when I overlay them in pure black, what am I doing wrong? They have different colours to distinguish, right?"

Short answer: Nah.

Long answer:

Don't worry, Im here to help you out on how to make different jaw structures.

Well first off, I have nothing against basic structures or repeating snout shapes. But I found it frustrating at one point how all my dragons looked vastly the same in terms of face. This is more about design, not anatomy.

Slide 1 you see my OCs Serya and Alastor. On the first glance, those two look the same: spiky, long snout, one horn, looks like a Rip-off Drogon.

If you look closely, you can see there is indeed a big difference not only in details, but also jaw and head structure. This ultimately differences them apart from their very similar details.

Serya has a bulkier skull. Her head is thicker and her snout tip is more curved up, creating a generally more curved upper jaw.

Alastor has a more sleek, straighter head. His upper jaw is way bigger in comparison to the lower, and his general jaw is thinner and more streamlined.

I redrew their skulls on slide 2 for better apart telling, without the details. Funnily enough their horns hint at their build aswell, dunno if anybody noticed that just now lol

On Slide 3 is the absolute basic of the basic dragon head structure. All those marked parts can be adjusted in length and bulkiness. You can curve the tip of the jaw downwards into a triangle or make the lower jaw ridiculously massive in comparison to the upper, theres a lot of possibilities. Not to mention the horns, but I will do a seperate post on them.

Slide 4 kinda showcases that for snouts. I drew a bunch of different snout designs. Even if I added the exact same details onto every head, they could still be told apart because of their different structures.

Hope this helps lol

I dug this out finally.

Im currently not drawing, I just lost my cat this week and sitting on my desk alone brings back painful memories, because he always came to me when I was drawing, demanding pets. Im not sure how long I will grief but for now you guys only get old art stuff.

I just lost my lovely boy Krümel.

Krümel is the german word for Crumb.

I don't know where to post this, so I just chose this subreddit. Around one hour ago, I was at the vet. We treated him for atleast 2 months before. I was his favourite human.

He had cancer, in his throat. We just found out because the vet told us. It was too late, so we put him down. Me and my brother were with him the entire time.

Boy, he had his attitudes, but he was overall very chill. He would have been 10 years old in 2 weeks...luckily his personality didnt change and Im glad for that. Im grateful I was with him in his last moments, I was afraid I would have been at work or something when anything would have happened.

I dont know how to handle such grief, knowing he will never sit on my lab anymore, I wont hear his meows...I lost people before, but he is the first thing to matter to me this much.

My heart goes out to everyone else who also lost their cats. He had a good life with us notheless, and I think he knew that.

Thanks for reading. I will now bawl my eyes out.

Art tip 1: Don't forget to do warm-up sketches!

Im doing a mini series with art tips I taught myself that helped me. Maybe it helps some beginners here aswell.

This is more like a tip for when you draw regulary or almost every day.

"Beanz, what do you mean I should do warm-up sketches?"

Well my fellow artists, after I started doing multiple commissions, drawing became exhausting. With exhausting I mean the first commission of the day looked like total crap.

The reason for that is because I directly went into action, when warm-up sketches is what I should have done first. The picture is my usual warm-up sketch sheet, where I draw shapes and lines, along with a few heads, scales and legs. It helps me to get in the mood kinda. Its like stretching before the race.

I feel like a lot of beginner artists dont know this..? This is usually the reason when I sat down and thought "hey, I wanna draw this cool dragon head today" and then I start drawing and it looks ahh, because I didnt warm up first.

I noticed I draw from my wrist a lot, but its better to draw from the shoulder. Your wrist is important, and drawing a lot with it wears it out quickly. You automatically draw with your wrist, so practising to draw from my shoulder with this sheet helps a lot too.

You can also draw just straight lines or circles or just sketched heads, its really not limited or anything. I do these sheets before every piece I draw now.

What place on earth would be the safest to live in for a dragon?

Im also taking places into account where the government wouldnt be so quick to locate one. Realistically, scientists would try to capture it and extermine it, so in the middle of a city is obviously bad.

The dragon Im thinking of is a very simple wyvern, 2 hindlegs, 1 wingpair and a wingspawn of 15.5 meters.

Either it has fire breath with the help of an organ that stores methan or acidic/poisonous spit, skin and/or stinger. Or maybe it doesnt have any of that and instead has big scaleplates out of keratin (because keratin is very light) that protect it against attacks? I mean, an open fire attracts more attention.

It also needs space to fly, somewhere safe from weather to sleep and enough food. Since the dragon is so big, I imagine it having to constantly eat small bits to not gain too much weight because it is too heavy to fly then.

Or he eats a lot once a week and wont be able to fly for some days.

Im specifically talking about this flyable dragon. A single dragon in the pacific ocean wouldnt be so easy to find obviously, depending how deep it can dive.
