Advice for new players joining our Riftbound locals

I saw some posts from new players.

We've also noticed some new faces lately at our locals and honestly we think it's time someone said something because clearly nobody has.

We talk during games, like A LOT. As my boy Claude loves to repeat during his slop code reviews, "This is not a bug this is a FEATURE". If you take more than 12 seconds on a decision one of us WILL say "yep yep yep take your time king" and you need to understand that this is LOVE AND RESPECT. This is how Nickozz showed love back when he actually showed up. Nickozz is dead to us now (actually please come back Nickozz) but the tradition lives on.

We also count your shuffles out loud and in unison. If you go over 7 riffles someone is going to start a slow clap and you need to be ready for that emotionally BEFORE it happens, not during. If you hit 10 riffles, you need to shotgun a Monster energy out back to atone for your sins.

If you make a suboptimal play, we will tell you what you SHOULD have done in real time, at full volume, sometimes standing up to get a better view of the board so we can explain it properly. This is not us being rude this is FREE COACHING and you should be thanking us honestly. If Jarvis doesn't sit down and stands over the board for the rest of the game instead of going back to playing Genshin Impact, it's totally normal so chill out about it.

One of our regulars, Big Tony, has not lost a set as Lux since May and he will remind you of this constantly, mid-turn, unprompted, in the third person ("Big Tony doesn't miss"). When he wipes the board with his 3rd back-to-back-to-back Ruination, you're expected to say, "Thank you".

We know it's a lot... We know. But once you get used to it you will realize this is the most welcoming community in the children's card game space and anyone who says otherwise just needs thicker skin.

Welcome to Riftbound and see you at Nexus Night! :)

[IMPORTANT] RIFTBOUND RULES CHANGE ANNOUNCEMENT

After extensive deliberation (I think), the mod team has decided that human generated content is simply not meeting the standard this community deserves.

We watched a genuine masterpiece get #1 on the main sub with hundreds of upvotes only for it to be deleted a day later because it wasn't made by a person....... This was the wake up call we needed and THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN. You little piggies want that yummy yummy AI slop but you just don't know it yet.

We need to go the same route that Rito has been going for it's balancing decisions - AI hallucinations. Going forward, all posts should be AI generated. Human effort has had its chance. It is time to let the machines cook (and gobble up all that water babyyy).

New rules:

  • All memes should be AI generated.
    • We don't want those poorly drawn human things in this very professional workspace.
  • Text posts should ideally be written with the assistance of AI.
    • We understand that TCG players are mostly illiterate children so ya'll need all the help you can get.
  • If a mod on the main sub would delete it, it belongs here.
    • Just please no extreme NSFW content - save that for your goon cave you pervert.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!

Never Stop Believing

10 boxes, around 30 blisters. Over the span of two months.

1 Kha Signature, 3-4 ON’s, and finally after all that.. my girlfriend pulls this from a Best Buy 8 blister purchase.

Aftermath of the seven failed blisters behind it.

Can we please stop calling them Overnumbered cards?

I have been thinking about this for a while and I need to get it off my chest.

When I try to explain to people that I have a basement full of beautiful Overnumbered cards, the conversation usually ends shortly after that.

The term "Overnumbered" is doing this game a disservice. These are the rarest and most prestigious cards in the entire set and they deserve a name that reflects that. "Overnumbered" makes it sound like Riot ran out of regular numbers and had to use the extras. Or some sort of clerical error like someone at the print facility miscounted and nobody caught it before shipping.

I have some suggestions that I think better capture the prestige of pulling one of these.

  • Premium Numbered
  • Elite Numbered
  • Executive Numbered
  • Prestige Numbered

Any of these communicate the gravity of what you are holding. Any of these would make a collector feel like they have achieved something.

Let's all come together as a community and select a name that is more appropriate!

Ex-Riftbound players — what made you quit and why?

The game has been out for a while now and I think it's important to hear from the many of us who quit and have moved on. What was the breaking point for you?

I quit in early November after a very difficult experience that I don't want to talk about and have not played since. I still drive past the LGS on Thursdays and occasionally watch Nexus Nights from the parking lot. But that aside I am most definitely done with this game and I have moved on completely.

Drop your stories below! This is a safe space for former players.

Disappointed that Kai'Sa is played so rarely

I don't know who at Riot decided that Kai'Sa should no longer be competitively viable but I need them to reconsider immediately and ensure that she gets proper card support.

Kai'Sa was a fixture on the board and I want to be very clear about something. That card art is a masterpiece... The detail, the colors, that way she gazes longingly into the void like she knows something you don't... gawd.

Every game that I saw her laying on the board I felt something. I don't know how else to describe it... Just something. You won, you lost - whatever - it didn't really matter when your opponent played her. Now that is gone and I'm not really sure what to do.

Bring back Kai'Sa. This game used to be beautiful and I used to be okay.

Rare pulls from first packs!!

I saw some other people posting their first pulls so I thought I would share too!!

I haven't played Riftbound yet, but picked up a few packs at my LGS. Here are the rares that I was able to pull! Are the hits usually this good or is this normal?

Excited about learning the rules and figuring out how to put together a deck for my first Nexus Night!

Disgusted by the amount of lewd cards in this CHILDREN'S CARD GAME

This is a CHILDREN'S CARD GAME and I think Riot needs to be held accountable for what they are putting in these packs.

I'm absolutely disgusted looking at some of these images and what they are putting in OUR local game stores so CHILDREN can open them and take the cards home to their unsuspecting families. I'm going to have to not only talk about this at our next GOSH DARNED HOA meeting so we can ban this game in our community, BUT I'm also going to be calling EVERY local representative I know BECAUSE THIS IS NOT OK.

I need this community's help identifying cards that cross the line so that we know which ones to avoid. Please be as descriptive as possible when listing them. Card numbers and set codes would also be helpful so I can find and properly document them for my formal complaint to Riot so we can get this shut down AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER.

[OFFICIAL] Parking Lot Guide and Packing List

Given the excitement in our community about the topic, I thought I would put together a short guide and packing list for what to bring on your first forays into the LGS parking lot. There is a lot to cover so I thought I would start with a brief guide on getting started.

First and most importantly, you need to figure out the LGS that you're interested in. Once you've locked that down, you'll need to figure out what day and time Nexus Nights are being held. It's best to get a lay of the land beforehand so you understand what you're up against. Plan to drive by the establishment a couple days ahead of time. I suggest waiting until well after nightfall and normal business hours. This way, you won't deal with traffic or crowds and you'll be able to easily see without the glare of the sun on your windshield. Given the type of people that are out at night, it's best to remain in your vehicle and keep moving. I typically circle towards the LGS by going around the block a few times before entering the parking lot and circling there. Once you understand the layout and obstacles, head home to document your findings.

Once you've completed your initial assessment, you may need to head back for additional intel. Do so as much as you see fit, but I would stick to the recommended times and strategy. Once you've constructed a detailed map of your findings, identify where you would like to position yourself. It's best to be in a spot facing the establishment so you don't have to climb into the backseat. Make note of dumpsters, trashcans, and other receptacles that Nexus Night purveyors may dispose of wrappings and potentially bulk cards. Then, once you're confident enough, you can begin your packing list.

Suggested packing list:

  • -Mobile phone, tablet, or computer - This will allow you to post your deep knowledge on Twitter, r/Riftbound, or r/riftboundtcg while you're waiting to Nexus Night to start or during slow points while the Aurora player figures out what their cards do
  • Binoculars - Depending on how far away you position yourself, it's often hard to get a good view of the Nexus Night action. These might help with understanding some of the nuances of the board state
  • Card sleeves - Just in case you score big and someone disposes of product, you can identify the location, then move in when the coast is clear, secure your card, and then keep it safe
  • Notebook and pen - for documenting license plates of regulars so you can cross reference attendance patters with product availability
  • Flashlight - for attempting to understand the card rules text in low light conditions after securing product from nearby receptacles
  • Lotion - If it's a dry environment, you might need some so you're not uncomfortable
  • A second phone - in case your primary device dies during a particularly long stakeout
  • Change of clothes - In case you need to blend in if someone approaches the vehicle
  • Rubber gloves - If you see a dropped card, wrapper, or other Riftbound paraphernalia, it's best to have some gloves on hand to wear while you pick it up so you don't get Doritos dust on it
  • Duct tape - Depending on the time of day and position of the LGS, there might be a glare when observing. You can scavenge for cardboard out of the nearest waste receptacles and then use the duct tape to attach it to your windows for a better viewing experience.
  • Knife - In very rare cases, there might be new product! You can use the knife to open it without damaging the contents inside
  • Ski Mask - Depending on the time of year and temperature, it can get cold waiting for Nexus Night to wrap up

Once you've made your list and loaded up your car, you're ready for Nexus Night! Make sure to show up very early so you can snag the optimal parking spot. Once settled, enjoy!

I'll release additional guides to go over what to do next and how to handle difficult situations like when people look your way.
