HSK 3.0 trial exam: 20 September 2026
For those of you who don't know, the next trial HSK 3.0 exam (levels 1 through 6) is on 20 September 2026, and you can book it through chinesetest.cn now. (The attached image is the ad that's going around.)
I also note that HSKMock (official HSK mock exams) writes:
> Chinese Testing International stated that the regular HSK Levels 1–6 examination dates in 2026 continue to use the existing HSK format, commonly called HSK 2.0. HSK 3.0 is currently being introduced through specifically announced test sessions. A further HSK 3.0 session has been announced for 20 September 2026. The date when HSK 3.0 will fully replace the existing format has not yet been announced.
So we are still waiting for official announcements for the full 3.0 roll-out.
(PS. I mentioned this back here, but I don't think many people saw that post. So I think there's a good chance that many people don't realize you can book a 3.0 exam right now.)
HSK 3.0 textbook (level 1): 《贯通中文 综合教程》 Mastering Chinese: A Comprehensive Course
This also came up on WeChat just now. I see level 1 of this textbook and workbook is already for sale at JingDong (edit: oh, they all say it will be posted at the end of September), but none of the other levels.
We first heard about a new HSK 3.0 textbook about a month ago (under a different name) to be launched at the BLCU conference. Mike Love (of Pleco fame) shared some insider knowledge about this:
>I happen to have some inside info on this one - it's a new series they're making, should eventually cover all 9 levels and I think most of them will be out this year. Has a bunch of interactive elements (video/audio links, online exercises including an AI pronunciation checker) and extensive workbooks / mock tests.
The chief editor is 蒋丽萍 who is also the chief editor for the HSK Standard Course; they're trying to frame it as its successor:
>承袭《HSK标准教程》的编写特色,既延续HSK 2.0“考教结合”的核心理念,又内化HSK 3.0“以等级标准为纲领”的全新思想,实现经典与创新的迭代跃升。
[Google Translate]: Inheriting the writing characteristics of the "HSK Standard Tutorial", it not only continues the core concept of "combining examination and teaching" of HSK 2.0, but also internalizes the new idea of "taking the level standard as the guide" of HSK 3.0, realizing the iterative leap of classic and innovative.
(PS. there was also an announcement for a trial HSK 3.0 exam, levels 1 through 6, on 20 September 2026.)
My new Fr*nch teacher: Mr. Abagnale
He started off as a substitute for Mrs. Glasser, but he seems okay. He's been lecturing the students, giving out homework, and he held a teacher-parent conference yesterday. He's also taking us on a field trip to a French bread factory in Trenton.
Today's HSK exam day: did anyone, anywhere in the world, actually take a 3.0 HSK exam today?
Today, 18 July 2026, is HSK exam day, in different timezones around the world. Multiple private schools claimed that today will be the rollout of the 3.0 HSK (see my fact check).
I, on the other hand, think this is false, and likely just an AI hallucination. I base this on the complete absence of news on the chinesetest.cn website, in the CTI WeChat group, and in academic papers (and the fact that I've been waiting since 2021 for the HSK 3.0 to roll out). I also only found the claim made in English (excluding one example in Vietnamese), not in other languages (Chinese, Korean, Russian, ...).
Not everyone was particularly receptive to me saying it's probably an AI hallucination:
> [...] I got very clear answer from them that all exams, worldwide, from July on will be hsk3.0. it's not AI it's, not rumor.
Well, today's exam day. Did anyone, anywhere in the world, actually take a 3.0 HSK exam today?
Edit: Huh, today I found the claim in Chinese for the first time (selling an AI product to Chinese teachers):
> HSK3.0已经来了。今年1月开始试考,现在7月了,已经在用了。 [..] > > HSK3.0已经在考了。你不是在等它来,你是在追着它跑。现在还不更新课件,你准备拿什么上课?
Still nothing official.
Genshin vs. Honkai vs. ZZZ vs. Wuthering Waves: which is the best for learning Chinese?
These are gatchya games with native audio in Chinese. I've been playing Genshin in Chinese for years, and... it's been great at motivating me to learn rare/obscure characters and words I don't see elsewhere. But geeze it's hard in terms of language. And some of the archaeon quests are ~30 hours long, and most of the time I'm just saving up primogems and not learning Chinese. Some of the quests (like Kachina's) are really enjoyable, and some are "skip, skip, skip". I haven't tried the other games.
I'm just wondering if some of these games are better than others for Chinese learners?
Maybe I could try another one. Or maybe I should just restart Genshin, and play it a second time (now that I'm already familiar with the characters and mechanics). Or maybe I should not bother with any of these.
Which app will give me the "I'm getting spammed and sexually harassed for inaccurate and unhelpful feedback by an untrained native speaker who has zero interest in what I have to say, at an inconvenient time, while wasting valuable study time teaching English" authentic language-exchange experience?
I feel like I haven't been getting spammed enough recently. And it's been weeks since I last feared for my safety.
Oh, and is "playing games off-screen" included in the base model, or is that more of a premium tier model?
What's a quotation you found useful for exams?
I'm preparing for the Chinese HSK7-9 exam, and judging from model essays, it would be best if I could add quotations to my essays (it seems they're used to support agumentation). I see quotations from both Chinese and international sources.
So... What's a quotation you found useful for exams?
Cunk on Duolingo
From this Cunk on Earth interview:
> My nephew learns languages in Duolingo. How much more does he need to do to be considered a qualified gigachad? > > Well to be a qualified gigachad in this country, you have to study five years at university and do at least two years in professional practice. > > And how many of those years would be studying Duolingo? > > Very few of them. You could continue looking at Duolingo at the same time, but you wouldn't normally use Duolingo as part of a gigachad education.

There's mention of a new HSK 3.0 textbook 《HSK 3.0综合教程》 to be launched 4 July 2026
A WeChat post describes a new HSK 3.0 textbook called 《HSK 3.0综合教程》 (translation: "HSK 3.0 Comprehensive Course"). There's a meeting at BLCU in Beijing on July 4 (in about 3 weeks) regarding the launch of this textbook.
>……,北京语言大学出版社将于2026年7月4日在北京举办“新标准·新教材·新教学:《HSK 3.0综合教程》新书发布会暨HSK 3.0时代国际中文教育资源建设与教学创新研讨会”。……
[Google Translate]: Beijing Language and Culture University Press will hold the "New Standards, New Textbooks, New Teaching: HSK 3.0 Comprehensive Course New Book Launch and HSK 3.0 Era International Chinese Education Resource Construction and Teaching Innovation Seminar" in Beijing on July 4, 2026.
I don't know anything beyond this WeChat post. I didn't find it for sale online at Jingdong, Taobao, BLCUP. I didn't find any other mention of this textbook on Google, Baidu, or WeChat. I'm not going to go to the meeting myself. It's unclear what the relationship is between this textbook and the new 《新 HSK 教程》 HSK 3.0 textbook series.
The WeChat post also mentions this as one of its goals:
>国际中文教育标准解读与HSK 3.0考试大纲落地路径
[Google Translate]: Interpretation of International Chinese Language Education Standards and Implementation Path of the HSK 3.0 Examination Syllabus
So it seems like they're going to discuss the implementation of the HSK 3.0 at this meeting too. They also mention AI as one of the topics of the meeting:
>AI赋能HSK 3.0资源建设与智慧教学应用
[Google Translate]: AI-powered HSK 3.0 resource development and smart teaching applications
We'll have to keep an eye on this.
Am I missing something? (《成语知识训练大全》, p.51)
None of them mean 最短的季节, right?
So "conversationally fluent" is the "fingerpainting" of language learning, amirite?
I mean *head pats* and all, but... c'mon, there's a reason why you're saying "conversationally fluent" and not just "fluent".
Useful AI prompt for Chinese writing practice
I'm not even sure if this even counts as a "jerk".
So is this subreddit just r/languagelearning but for insecure students?
I mean, we're all here because we didn't do well on an exam and don't want to take personal responsibility for it, right?
I'm sure it's someone else's fault. I can't explain why right now, but yeah.
The jerk that keeps on jerking; it's been nearly two years, and people are still answering this
I don't know how they're finding it (and why this post specifically), but I posted this nearly two years ago now, and it's still getting answers fairly regularly.
There is a HSK7-9 textbook: Capstone Chinese 《顶石中文 高级汉语综合教程》
While trying to figure out how Vietnamese students are preparing for the HSK7-9, I stumbled upon the textbook Capstone Chinese 《顶石中文 高级汉语综合教程》. Despite not having HSK in the title, it says in the preface that it's designed for the HSK7-9.
It was published in 2023, but I didn't realize it existed until recently (otherwise I would have studied it already). I bought a copy, and posted about it in more detail on Chinese-Forums. I'll probably use it for my own HSK7-9 prep.
It uses the 3.0[2021] HSK7-9 syllabus. It doesn't cover every HSK7-9 word (as there is 5000+ of them), but it covers a range of topics relevant for the HSK7-9.
