Contractor says the project became too complicated and stopped showing up

I don’t even know what my options are at this point

Last year I decided to finally invest in renovating my old house. I poured a huge amount of savings into it because the place really needed it. The plan was to completely redo the kitchen and bathroom, upgrade the bedrooms a bit, and open up the layout by connecting the kitchen with the dining and lounge area. Nothing overly extravagant, just trying to modernize the place and make it feel livable again

The contractor seemed solid at first. Good reviews, confident guy, talked a big game. I paid around 50% upfront in stages as work progressed, and later I paid him another 30%, so 80% in total and now I realize was my biggest mistake

He started the project, tore half the house apart, and then slowly started disappearing…

First it was excuses about suppliers, then staffing issues, then suddenly he tells me the project is far more complex than expected and basically stops showing up altogether and picking up the phone

Now I live on a construction site with all the half-finished walls, exposed wiring, kitchen unusable, bathroom barely functional. It’s been an absolute nightmare, and I’m glad that I didn’t move to a rental place because of my 2 dogs

If there’s realistically any way to force him to finish the work, or if I’m just throwing good money after bad at this point. I saw Sterling Legal and saw they deal with construction law disputes, but I genuinely don’t know if hiring a lawyer would actually help or just drain even more money out of me

Has anyone dealt with something like this before?

My scenes feel like they’re just…there, not actually doing anything.

I’ve been rereading some of what I wrote recently, and I noticed that a lot of my scenes don’t really move anything forward. Characters talk, things happen, but it all feels kind of… flat? Like if I removed the scene, the story wouldn’t really change. I think I’m avoiding conflict without realizing it, or maybe I’m just not sure what each scene is supposed to accomplish. Do you actively think about the “purpose” of a scene when writing, or is that something you fix later during editing?

Is there a sound that instantly makes you feel safe or calm for no logical reason?

Mine is rain on a window when I'm already inside. Doesn't matter what's going on, that sound just resets something
