Pelizzoli Rides Again

TL;DR: this gem is finally back in these streets but still keeping its secrets.

Last winter I acquired and built up this frameset, which had spent many years unrideably stashed away, and posted on this sub a few months back after some test riding. I’ve finally been able to put over a hundred miles on it with warming/drying weather, and it’s quickly become a favorite for the ride: light, smooth, well-balanced and nimble as one would expect given the geometry but with surprisingly little flex, likely a credit to the SLX tubes — impressive considering the absence of a chainstay bridge.

It is a Pelizzoli Designer Microf C 40, similar to the Ciöcc Designer ‘84 Microf C 40, both made by Giovanni “Ciöcc” Pelizzoli, an Italian master frame builder. This one that bears his surname and signature features some unique flourishes in the construction: seat stays that mimic the fork’s curve into a fastback cluster, internal cable routing, pantographed Cinelli spoiler BB shell and chrome winged fork crown, filed-n-filled lugs, predictably exquisite craftsmanship all around. Painted cutouts include the FD braze-on, apparently for builders’ eyes only.

There are no serial numbers anywhere on frame or fork (the BB shell # is Cinelli’s), and it’s proven tough to find information. It has 126/100 spacing and Italian threading. At best guess Pelizzoli custom built it in the mid- or late-80s for R. Gemi, whose name is still faintly visible on the top tube. Fortunately I’m about his size, and with a bit of luck I hope to ride this thing right into my grave… but hopefully not anytime soon!

‘88 Miyata 618GT supercommuter

Near final form after picking this one up last summer, and I’m in love. I fully cleaned and rebuilt it, fixed some spokes and a bent rear axle, and now we ride together more days than not!💙💛

18-speed SunTour XCM drivetrain with indexed barcons, Dia Compe canti brakes with Kool Stop pads, Brooks Pro saddle on fluted SR post, Pace milk crate on original alloy rack, 40h rear and 36h front Sansin hubs laced to alloy Araya rims 🎶wit Pirellis on the tires🎶 (and Shorty Wanna Ride), 35c with plenty of room for the 45mm fenders, Road Champion rando bars, adjustable cup/can holder, yellow pedals, two-tone blue bottle cages — all on a spline triple butted steel frame in bodacious Cosmic Blue.

Salt Creek @ 294 update

Did a quick morning ride on Salt Creek Trail to check out the 294 underpass progress — hoooly crap, it’s paved!! Saw some discussion of it on the excellent Prairie Path to Salt Creek ride vid grumpsuarus just posted so figured I’d share.

It’s not carbon or titanium…☠️. Certainly not a monocoque, and not even aluminum. Just good, old fashioned (~50 years), British-tubed, Basque-built goodness, weighing in around 20lb. Did a 40-mile shakedown ride this morning, and it is terrific!

I recently lucked into a refinished Zeus Super Ser frameset from the 70s. I built it up with the parts I’d cobbled together for my old, oversized Zeus of less blingy quality. Fortunately both are French-threaded and -headsetted. 🇪🇸🤝🇫🇷

Featuring a Zeus 2000 group of the finest Spanish drillium (except for the Superbe Pro hubs… the hunt continues) including the exceptional pedals with titanium quills and needle roller bearings.

It’s a great ride, and I’m aiming to put 50 miles of fun cruise on it this weekend if weather permits!
