My first harvest!

My first harvest!

I planted zinnias around the mailbox at our house this spring and finally got the courage to go harvest a few in the hopes that it’ll help them become fuller!

These may be my new favorites! 🤍

Heirloom Jade Care Help

I inherited this Jade from my husband’s family as a gift when we had our first baby recently. The story is that it’s well over 100 years old and I’m the 4th generation to care for it - pretty cool really. According to family members, this thing used to be huge and was a pretty impressive bush shape. It’s just been getting thinner and hasn’t bloomed in decades (the didn’t even know it could bloom).

The problem is, each person that has inherited it has known less and less about how to properly care for it. So now we’ve found ourselves here, inheriting a Jade that’s generally a little sad IMO.

It’s very leggy and supposedly dropped a bunch of leaves and smaller stems before it was given to us. I’ve already repotted it (apparently hadn’t been done since about 2000), pruned some of the funkier pieces and put them back down into the soil. I have also moved it to our porch so it gets more sunlight (SW facing) but not in direct sun as I’m afraid it’ll get burned since we live in Southern Georgia.

I’m absolutely horrified of killing this plant and it’s so important to our family but it’s just so sad and I’d love for it to be restored to its original glory! Does anyone have advice when it comes to pruning, sunlight, etc. to get this baby happy again?

Care Tips for Dendrobium Nobile

I recently rescued this Tanida Pink Stripe Dendrobile Nobile from Lowe’s for a whole $5…I know, it’s a steal. It was on sale simply because it had fallen over in its pot and was planted in potting soil.

I’ve had it home for a few days and am realizing just how little I know about these guys. In looking at photos, my leaves seem to be curling and there’s some browning on the stems that I’m not sure is normal.

I’ve repotted it in an orchid basket in a combination of sphagnum moss and orchid bark. It got a nice leaf cleaning and was checked thoroughly for pests when I brought it home. I’m watering it twice a week with rainwater and am letting it soak for about 10 minutes when I do since the substrate is so dry. It sits between two windows, one North facing and the other West facing so it gets lots of sunshine.

We’re in Southern Coastal Georgia so I’m planning to move it outside on our porch for the winter so it goes into dormancy and flowers again in the spring.

Can someone more experienced let me know if I’m caring for her correctly? I don’t want my clearance rack find of a lifetime to die!
