Finally added this gem to my vinyl collection!!!

Found this grail yesterday in the wild, a mint condition US promo-stamped original pressing of OutKast – Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik (1994, LaFace).

Hard to overstate how important this record is in the context of early ’90s hip-hop.

This was one of the first major releases to bring Atlanta/Southern rap into the national conversation, and it effectively introduced OutKast, Organized Noize, and the broader Dungeon Family sound to a wider audience.

What stands out to me is how cohesive it sounds front to back, especially for a debut album - live, funk-influenced production that leaned more toward composition than the sample-heavy East/West Coast approach of the time (Organized Noize really pushed that direction early on).

In my opinion, this is the most influential rap album of the 90’s, it completely changed the course of hip-hop, both in terms of production, style, flow and lyricism, and still sounds fresh and original to this very day.

It also serves as the launch point for Andre 3000 and Big Boi, and the foundation for everything they and the Dungeon Family went on the influence afterwards.

I have been searching for this vinyl for a longtime, and I am extremely excited to finally give it a spin and add it to the shelf.

What is everyone’s opinion on this album, where does it stack up/rate in terms of your ultimate hip-hop vinyl grails?

Found this gem in the wild today - Had to pick it up!

Found this gem while hunting today — an authentic Studio 1 original Jamaican pressing!

I’m pretty hyped because I collect original Studio 1 Jamaican presses, which are really hard to come by, and I had never seen this teal label variation before. Usually when I come across this record, it has one of the later label variations or is one of the many Coxsone represses.

For this album — and many Studio 1 releases — one way to identify an authentic first press is the oversaturated cover artwork. They usually corrected this issue on later runs.

What fascinates me about Studio 1 is how records were pressed in very small quantities. Once a batch sold, another small run would be made, sometimes with only subtle changes to the label or artwork.

Anyone else here obsessed with hunting original Studio 1 in the wild?

I love the feeling of holding a genuine piece of musical history, and honestly, part of the fun is researching and tracking down the true first Jamaican pressings.

Also, Jackie Mittoo was an unbelievable composer and artist.

Curious what everyone here thinks — are original Studio 1 Jamaican presses still undervalued compared to their historical importance and influence? And what’s your favorite Studio 1 original you’ve managed to find in the wild?

Found this grail in the wild yesterday….

Original UK press! Would have preferred the Jamaican but that one is hella impossible to find.

Was interested in this communities opinion on this album? Anyone else have it in their collections? Anyone else “hunting” it!
